If you had a choice to retire early, would you?

Actually for me I would retire early only if I'm self-sufficient. Then again, boredom will kill me.
Seems like the old ah peks do want to retire later by choice.
So what do you think?

Listen carefully to the responses of the old men. I don't hear them saying that they CAN retire. "got income" was one response.. so I wonder how the question was posed to them? If you ask the old men, "if you were offered to work, will you continue to work past retirement age?", do you think they won't say yes? And.. it seems those old men who were asked.. were not of executive or middle management positions. Technicians.. serve coffee.. is that a good guage of ALL the old folks we have in Singapore?

Not a good vid to convince me at all.

Like many others, you have misunderstood what the term "retirement" means.

"Retirement" does not mean not doing any work. It means not having to work for a living.

Refer to the retirement thread for more details.

yes thats true,to get a better image of singapore its better to ask those who are earning at least 10k per month and driving a mercedes or BMW.remember after all the other 50 to 80% of the population is irrelevant....no point asking these broke ass daft and stupid sinkies whether they want to retire or not.

I do get your point on retirement. But the sad thing is in SG, old ah peks are "retired" without being self-sufficient or a sense of direction in life.
I mean given a choice I'm sure I would like to retire, live off dividends from my investments and then do charity work and travel.
Don't we all wish that?

But sadly they are the voice of majority who air so much grievances. I'm sure the upper 20% do not have a problem with the word retirement. However that doesn't mean we should abandon the sinkies as you call them. They deserve a voice to be heard and to be helped too don't they?

Yes, most people think so, I agree with you, "retirement" means I do not have to slog in career & having not to work for a living...but working for the income at a pace, dictated by myself.....but alas!..how many SINgaporeans have that luxury to do that from 55 years onwards?? or even at 65...

Brainwashed gong cheebyes sinkies would never understand the concept of retirement.
Everyone should aim and work towards retirement target the day they start working.
The earlier the better.....those who can retire early are the envy of many....

Well every month 27% percent of your income disappears. Gst plus CPF. So how can people retire? You have high housing, high medical fees to fuck you up. Idiots who own cars deserve to be screwed
. But not the rest

Do we even have a choice to "retire", let alone "early"???? I can't foresee the day I can stop working to enjoy the remaining days of my life

Yes that is what I aim for. Be financially independent for the rest of my life and will not retire as long as I am enjoying my job.
