[/h][h=5]‎"If we truly call ourselves Workers’ Party supporters and supporters of democracy, we should not be chastising other opposition parties for contesting as all political party’s existence is to compete. Instead, let us focus on putting forth our own party platform and ideas to the electorate and let the people decide whose policies are better suited to represent them. Let there be debates. Let there be criticisms. If we really want to move forward, we need to see ourselves as not Anti-PAP but Pro-Singapore.

If the People’s Action Party wins in such a contest, so be it. It means we have not been working hard enough to convince the majority of the electorate that our policies are the best for them. We need to work harder.

Don’t be the very hand of self-censorship that had stifled this country’s cultural and intellectual growth for the past 47 years."[/h]

Fwah, who is this person? Mother Teresa? She is confusing the brutal world of politics with the feel good and do good world of the scouting movement. As if she has not realised, its not a level playing field here.

I think her point was that we should not try to dissuade other parties from encroaching on each others' turfs. Just concentrate on building up the party branding and the results will speak for themselves over time.

Oppo politics is for the long haul, there will be spoilers and MCFs and what have you, but this can no longer be avoided. Only easy day was yesterday, as per my signature.

woman is nothing but a white dick lover with low-self esteem..............hence the craving for white dick.................

now i wonder who are the ones bashing credible oppositions parties.

I think she has a simplistic notion of what democracy is and how one should aim to support it. The goal for Singapore is bring about democracy as it should be. Our situation is very unlike all the matured democracies where a free contest with many parties would not lead to a single dorminant party.

In our situation, we should be appealing for everyone to back the strongest opposition candidate. If such calls were intense and reflective of society at large, the saner parties will voluntarily step back and megalomaniacs like KJ and CSJ will pressured to pull back. Idiots like Desmond will lose their deposits.

She obviously does not understand that democracy requires people expressing their views candidly rather than curse under their breath and write what she thinks is politically correct opinion piece.

She is not wrong, but too simplistic and naive.

too bad political education will take too long on her.

This is the ideal, but political egos as well as the need to be accepted by the group always get in the way. Voters look towards party branding too, not just individual candidate strength. In terms of party branding there is a wide differential between parties, which cannot be ignored.

What we need is for the strong candidates to gravitate towards the strong parties and not get trapped in loyalty issues.

I did not realise educated simpletons exist outside the SDP. In WP of all places! Looks like the WP has started fornicating with the liberal right. Best of luck to you. You'll need it.

I get your point. You speak about time and the long haul, and I agree. I also think at this juncture in our history, we ought to have realised which opposition brand has emerged more credible and capable. In my earlier post, I mentioned we do not have a level playing field. We have little separate minions, going up against one entrenched powerhouse. At least let the party with the most likely chance of giving the powerhouse a fight, go one on one with it. Remember, one man one vote. Its a zero sum situation.

Her words will appeal to the non-confrontational voters of a unique PAP dominant Singapore, the same voters who have no idea what democracy really is - other than repeating it daily in th Pledge in their school days.

Yes, but will the Worker's party take in the strongest candidates? If VW or Nicole Seah were to cross over to the Worker's party today, do you think they will take him in, and do you think they will give him a meaningful role in the party? Multiple parties exist for a reason.

Regarding the question of more than 1 opposition party in Singapore, the big question is: if there is a hung parliament (most likely scenario if PAP loses more than half of the seats), will there be a coalition of all the non-PAP parties, or will one of them join the PAP in a coalition?

I don't think we are at that point in history yet. We will get to that point when all opposition parties are clear about who they are, what they stand for, how they are different from each other. We don't have a sense yet. I'm not going to have a Worker's Party dominate the opposition before I understand what they stand for. (And no, "we stand for everything that the PAP doesn't stand for" is not an acceptable answer).

Now is the time for the opposition parties to grow, develop and find themselves, and they can do that on separate tracks. No need to group everybody under the same umbrella.

Don't worry about the buffoons. They will fall on their own sword, and a lot of them are currently in the process of doing so.

I agree that WP office bearer should not do it as it as it appears greedy and selfish. But it society's duty to get the best outcome for the country. We should able to pressure and coerce an outcome that makes sense for the country.

The lady who wrote this is misguided.

Here is an analogy. No sane man will cut off his leg . But the chap who severed his leg which was trapped under a boulder needed to do it to save his life. This lady is crying out not to sever the leg because she does not know why the calls are being made in the first place.

If you want to be expansionist, you cannot tell others to back off.

Well said. And this exemplifies the reasons why the young impressionable self-fashioned liberals and their dead-set principles will cut no ice with the masses if they do not consider the context. Ditto for minimum wage, immigration and human rights.
