SINGAPORE: The government will contribute US$50,000 as seed money to support the Singapore Red Cross' (SRC) public fundraising efforts for communities affected by floods in Pakistan.
The SRC launched its fundraising appeal last week to support those in Pakistan impacted by the mid-August monsoon floods. It also committed S$50,000 (US$39,000) to support humanitarian efforts in Pakistan.
"The contribution by the Singapore government will supplement the SRC's pledge of S$50,000 to support the immediate needs of affected communities," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement on Friday (Sep 12).
"Singapore conveys its deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the floods."
Floods in Pakistan since late June have killed more than 900 people and forced millions to evacuate.
Torrential rains over five days in mid-August left at least 365 dead, with homes and schools suffering damage. Nine districts declared states of emergency, according to the United Nations.
In the eastern Punjab province, floods have submerged about 4,000 villages since Aug 23, displacing 2.1 million and killing at least 68, according to the Punjab Disaster Management Authority.
The severe weather is forecast to continue into early September, raising the risk of further flooding, landslides and crop losses, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

A man has been arrested after he was spotted at the Geylang Serai Market taxi stand dancing and interacting with members of the public boarding cabs.
In a video shared on SG Road Vigilante Facebook Group on Nov 20, the individual, who donned a red cap, would help passengers open taxi doors and load their items into the vehicle's boot.
Once the cars drove off, he would animatedly signal for the next vehicle to come forward by dancing and rolling his arms.
He was also seen assisting an elderly person in a wheelchair down the slope and into a taxi.
Throughout this, two police officers stood by and watched him.
At several points of the clip, the man would gesticulate at the police in a seemingly frustrated manner.
"Singapore Police officers looked bewildered while man provide doorman services that rival Narajan Singh at Raffles Hotel," read the video caption.
In response to AsiaOne's queries, the police said they received a call for assistance at 1 Geylang Serai on Nov 19 at about 11.10am.
"No injuries were reported. A 38-year-old man was arrested for public nuisance. Police investigations are ongoing."

This 'doorman service' has been there since I was little.. during the old Geylang market time. Only different is that people dun record and make viral. They dun asked for money, but we all give them as tips. Cos they help load our groceries into the taxis, helped our elderly onboard the taxis etc. Some of us at times also don't tip them off. Still they don't scold or make noise. They do no crime. Mostly the ones at Geylang market are our locals. They dun steal or rob. So just leave them alone please. If they not around to help, who will help our old makciks and pakciks then? YOU IS IT??
