PETALING JAYA: A keropok vendor pleaded not guilty in the Ayer Keroh magistrates’ court in Melaka today to two charges linked to his alleged use of a drone to trespass on Sungai Udang prison and smuggle tobacco into the facility on July 15.
Bernama reported that Nizam Ab Manaf, 46, entered his plea after the charges were read before magistrate Sharda Shienha Suleiman.
The first charge sees Nizam accused of committing criminal trespass by flying a drone into the prison at 1.20am on July 15.
The charge was framed under Section 447 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM3,000, or both upon conviction.
Nizam is also accused of smuggling tobacco into the prison using a drone at the same time and date.
This second charge was framed under Section 58 of the Prison Act 1995, which provides for a fine of up to RM10,000, up to five years’ imprisonment, or both upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Siti Nur Alia Safri proposed bail of RM20,000 for both charges and requested a date for the submission of case documents.
Izzuddin Ab Malek, Nizam’s lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation, applied for reduced bail on the grounds that his client earns only RM1,700 a month and has a family to support.
Sharda allowed bail of RM7,000 for both charges and ordered Nizam to report to the nearest police station once a month.
