I miss the Singapore in the 90s

Actually, I don't miss much of Singapore in 90s. I spent most of the 90s in US and elsewhere abroad. Singapore in the 70s and 80s hold more memorable moments for my nostalgic reminiscing. The biggest event in 90s for me was to watch a World Cup game in the stadium, yes, really there. LA Rose Bowl. Brazil 1 Sweden 0 Semi-Final 1994. The stadium capacity was about twice that of Kallang National Stadium and full-house. That was some experience. Somehow my boss got a couple of tickets and I was in luck. :D

I miss those days in the 1990s when I have kopi and roti prata for only 50 cents in the kopitiam.

Don't remember the exact amount but I remember that I only need a few coins for my afternoon snack. :)

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Where was I then?

How true, back then met many ex-Malaysians who converted to Singapore citizenship. Now hardly come across any among the younger ones, they'll tell you - "convert for what?".

Yes... last time citizens got premium. Now, foreigners are premium. If oppos come to my place for voting, I will talking to all neighbors and ask them to vote wisely.

Now Spore citizenship is a liability e.g. NS, can't attend International schools even if you can afford it, treated unfairly in courts,....

The only thing citizenship gives is a "chance" to vote & for many they haven't had a "chance" yet.

whenever read these miss the past thread, my feel was so stiring, from fully agreed with thread starter, sad, and damn du lang the evil garment who made this lovely sunny place as a brotherl! all true blue singaporean, there still a chance to save this place. please vote wisely for the coming election, the garment r totally control the peasant like a peppet! break this chain and made here a better place to live with! use our chance of voting to send the oppostion trooper to the parliment to get our sound hear!!!

Singapore's "Golden Age" was from 1965 to 1990. The 1990's saw the start of the decline. In the early 1990s it was not so obvious. The decline was however obvious for all to see by the time the Asian Financial Crisis hit.

The PAP is living off past glory. We are now well into the transition phase as the pre-65 generation die off and those who suffered under PAP misrule become the majority.

I miss those days when you buy a packet of char kuey tiao, you bring your own eggs. hehe...:p but the days I missed most was the 80s. Then I was a teenage, everything was unsure but future looks bright, studying for a better tomorrow and enjoy the slow pace in Orchard Road MacDonald. Hangging around McDonald in Orchard Rd in black shirts was the in thing to do, feel so damn high class....:p

Yes, my awakening also started from Asian Financial Crisis when suddenly they say poor performance is due to uncontrollable external factors, but not long before that they said "More good years" and good performance is all due to them. Especially mad with them when they started to tie votes to upgrading during the election then.

Yes, I can't wait to vote! I used to worry about the quality of the opposition, but now after the billions lost and invasion by foreigners, I don't give a damn anymore. I think it is worse to be reduced to prisoner in my own country when I have no place to escape from being swarmed by foreigners and forever fearful of no job and not enough money for retirement.

Yes, our citizenship got no more premium left for most countries people. They only change so as to migrate to better countries. Saw a few PRCs who did that in my company, change to citizen and then migrate to Australia.

As for other PRCs who have no intention to migrate to better countries, they say they'll not convert to Singapore citizen so as not to lose their old age medical benefits.

I think few countries left are like Myanmar where people will still like to change to Singapore citizens due to their country political situation.

Yeah, those were the days...No hateful feelings. Only helping hands cos the only way was up. Benefitting everyone.
There's so much hatred nowadays.

Yes, so much unhappiness nowadays among the citizens. Only the new citizens and PRs are smiling.

I miss S'pore of the 70s. It wasn't that materialistic a society as it is today. Everything affordable then. Today? Better die if have prolong illness coz cheaper to die than seek treatment. Today, also 2nd class or 3rd class citizens. Some are treated worse than stateless people.

Haha I'm a 70s baby, 70s was definitely a good time! In the 70s, citizens are Number 1 and foreigners tried to integrate into society. Now citizens are number last and foreigners dont' even bother to integrate, they speak their own language, behave anyway they wish to behave, in short they're like the king here!!

Should watch this year's coz not many years left to watch your old idol grace the parade.

I'll never watch NDP again. To think that I used to happily participate 3 years in NDP during my secondary school days, spent my precious weekends and school holidays going for practices and rehearsals.

Still remember this NDP song then - "Singapore is my country, it is here that I belong...." My foot! Now some joker said Singapore is only a city. If that is the case, no need for NDP. They should scrap the NDP and channel the funds to living and medical benefits for senior citizens. That is the least they can do as they always have no money for senior citizens but plenty of money for YOG, new citizens, lost in investments etc.
