Nobody would refuse to upgrade their homes to be more comfortable, spacious and luxurious. It all boils down to having the financial means to do so. I know of HDB residents who drive luxurious cars, but they do so because it is either a used continental car nearing the end of its COE life span, or because their budget is enough to buy an expensive car, but not a private residence.

I have a colleague who drives a BMW 3-series, but stays in an old 4-room HDB unit. At the time he bought the car, it cost more than his flat. He could afford that car, but not a private condo, so he chose that vehicle and had to stay put in his flat.
