It is more than "something." I can name a few.

There is a lack in civic consciousness in the general public. Not everyone is guilty of this, but a high percentage, taking into consideration the high level of education in the island.

There is an obsession with image, face.

Education is viewed only as a means to achieve higher salary, not in contribution to society's better being.

Sports -looks like the country is more obsessed with champions winning medals than mass participation.

Arts - instead of allowing street grown arts to be given publicty and recognition, the authorities are funding high-end imports to dominate the arts scene.

Will stop here. But you get the idea.
