Basically, workers understood the implication of having a higher wage. Various "disputes" over the years has the workers relenting to demands in order to keep the factory, company afloat. In a perfect world, there won't be a need for unions or corporations to exist. Unfortunately, we don't live in one.

Of course that is common sense but in the Singapore context, it does not make sense that a family member is not paid his just dues in order to survive. The country's productivity per Singaporean is well below the average simply because of it's dependence on low wage FWs. Now in the case of most 1st world nations, it would be too costly to employ maids and other FWs. Citizens have to work doubly hard to make up for the shortfall, whether they are low or middle-income. They have shorter working hours than we do and they have minimum wages.

Over here, it is the norm to have low wage FWs because the government made it possible for them to do so. This is across the broad spectrum of all industries. Now if they had been wiser in the past, they should not have implement such a policy. It is too late to make the adjustments and the country and it's citizens are suffering now due to past mistakes. It is sad that the government are blaming the people for not being productive and choosy in taking jobs when these jobs are to replace low wage FWs and the wages received are not sufficient to survive. The problem may be too great for even the best brains to resolve, and eventually something has to give if nothing is done to ease the situation. Bringing in more and more foreigners is not the answer as it will alienate the citizens and the rulers who need their votes to stay in power.

The rulers are diluting the purity of the singaporean core who doesnt want them by importing more new citizens....especially the low level shithole types like pinoys and burmese who never had any real peace or stability and in their ardent gratefulness will just vote the pap in sheer gratitude......witness how the fuckers in the UMNO got their east malaysian vote bank??

The problem with Singapore is that it does not have the depth of talent required to take on the Western world on productivity alone. It therefore has no choice but to rely on a lower cost model.

This is not the government's fault and it is not the people's fault either. It is simply a stark reality. Trying to portion blame for the state of affairs does nothing to help the situation.
