Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has been targeted in an attempted attack during a televised public address, officials confirm. Several explosives-laden drones detonated as he was speaking at a military ceremony.
Venezuela's Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez has confirmed that an attack on Maduro took place at the event. Several drones rigged with explosives went off close to the presidential box during the address.
“All the investigations have indicated that (the explosions) were an attack on President Nicholas Maduro,” Rodriguez told media
Maduro has been moved to safety and is carrying on with his duties, he said. Seven National Guard soldiers have been injured as a result of the failed assassination, according to Rodriguez. The extent of their injuries has not been revealed.

In the video from the scene, Maduro and the officials standing beside him could be seen looking up in the air seconds before the address was cut off. The feed then cuts to a wide shot of the gathered servicemen, who break formation and start scattering.

Providing details of the incident, Rodriguez specified that the explosions struck at 5:41 local time, and several flying devices loaded with explosives were shot down by the presidential guard.
Maduro was speaking at the event marking the 81st anniversary of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB), a branch of the country’s armed forces, when the incident took place.

The moment Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro’s speech was interrupted by approaching drones laden with explosives was captured on video. The authorities confirmed the incident was an attempted assassination.
The Minister for Communication and Information of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez, has confirmed that the Venezuelan leader was targeted in a failed assassination attempt, that was broadcast live on national TV.
The broadcast showed Maduro and senior officials standing nearby in the government box peering into the skies before the video cuts off abruptly to show troops, lined up in parade order, breake rank and scatter from the scene.

A Ruptly video shot from another angle shows bodyguards rushing to shield Maduro from potential impact with what appears to be several bulletproof vests.

The sounds of glaring sirens can be heard over the half-empty square in the wake of the incident.

Rodriguez said two drones filled with explosives were shot down by trained military guard and seven servicemen were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries.
It was also reported that an explosion hit a building near the presidential palace where Maduro was delivering his address to mark the anniversary of the National Guard. It’s unclear if the two incidents have been related in any way.

A video has emerged on social media purporting to show the exact moment a drone, reportedly targeting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, bursts into pieces in Caracas after apparently being shot down by the military.
The footage was posted on Sunday by Cesar Guardiola, who describes himself as a security adviser and retired military serviceman. It is unclear whether Guardiola filmed it himself.

Maduro can be heard giving his speech in the background as the camera focuses on a drone flying in the sky. The drone is then seen to be engulfed in a fireball, followed a split second later by a loud bang. The cameraman then briefly lowers the camera, as people standing nearby can be heard panicking and rushing from the scene. When the camera refocuses on the sky, there is no trace of the flying object.
Earlier, Venezuelan Minister of Communication and Information Jorge Rodriguez announced that six people had been detained in connection with the reported plot to kill Maduro during an army commemoration event on Saturday. The assassination attempt, according to Rodrigues, involved three drones that were laden with explosives, all of which detonated. One of them exploded right in front of the presidential box, while the second detonated to the right of the platform. A third, previously unreported drone exploded to the south of the platform in the vicinity of a building, he said.
Earlier, it was reported that a building near the scene had caught fire. Possible explanations mentioned included a gas tank explosion and one of the drones crashing into it.

‘An attempt against the nation’: Diego Maradona slams attack on Venezuelan President Maduro
Maduro has blamed domestic 'ultra-right' opposition and Colombia for orchestrating the attack, which, according to Rodriguez, had taken six months to plot.
The president also alleged that "financiers and planners" of the attack resided in the US state of Florida, and asked the American authorities for assistance in bringing the alleged perpetrators to justice.
Colombia has since refuted claims that it had anything to do with the attack. The US National Security Advisor John Bolton has also "unequivocally"dismissed speculation that Washington might have had a hand in the incident.
Leaders of several Latin American countries, including Venezuela's closest allies Cuba, Nicaragua and Bolivia, have condemned the attack, with Bolivian President Evo Morales pinning the blame on the US and its 'lackeys.'
Moscow has denounced the attempted assassination as an attempt to further destabilize the situation in the country, which is experiencing a severe economic crisis, calling it "the use of terrorism for political struggle."
