Houthi rebels used an explosive-packed drone to target Yemen’s military leaders at an army parade on Thursday, killing six soldiers and wounding several senior officers.
The Iranian-backed rebels detonated the drone above a ceremonial dais, spraying Yemeni officers with shrapnel and causing the ceremony to dissolve into chaos.
The attack showed a surprising level of sophistication for the Houthi rebels and is likely to further undermine UN efforts to broker a peace deal to end the Yemen’s brutal four-year war.
Video of the attack showed the drone screeching down from the cloudy sky and exploding a few metres above the dais where Yemeni officers were watching the military parade. Six soldiers were killed in the blast.
Ahmed al-Turki, governor of Lahj province, was wounded in the attack along with several senior military and intelligence officers. General Abdullah al-Nakhi, the army chief of staff, was at the parade but appears to have escaped unarmed.

The attack took place near the al-Anad airbase outside Aden, deep inside government held territory in southern Yemen.
Nick Waters, an analyst with Bellingcat investigative website, said the Houthi drone appeared to be based on an Iranian Ababil T drone. It was not clear if the drone was supplied by Iran or constructed by the Houthis based on an Iranian design.

“This appears to have been a well-planned and well-executed attack,” Mr Waters said. “They were targeting the high-value individuals on that dais and they hit the dais, not the parade area around it.”
The drone was likely launched from hundreds of miles away in Houthi-controlled territory and brought down on top of its target using GPS coordinates, rather than being steered by an operator.
The Houthis’ success in bringing the drone down in the middle of the military parade suggests they had specific intelligence about the timings and locations of the ceremony, Mr Waters said.

The rebel group has previously attempted similar drone attacks against Saudi radar stations used to launch Patriot missiles.
Moammar al-Eryani, Yemen’s information minister, said the attack was evidence that the Houthis were not serious about making a peace agreement.
"Once again this proves that the Houthi criminal militias are not ready for peace and that they are exploiting truces in order for deployment and reinforcements,” he said.
The UN brokered a ceasefire around the key port of Hodeidah in December. The ceasefire has largely held, despite infractions by both sides.
However, Martin Griffiths, the UN envoy for Yemen, warned this week that “substantial progress” was need before full-blown negotiations could be launched on ending the civil war.

"Both sides have largely adhered to the ceasefire and there has been a significant decrease in hostilities,” Mr Griffiths told the UN Security Council on Wednesday.
A new meeting is to be held in the Jordanian capital Amman next week to follow up on a huge prisoner swap agreed by the warring parties last month.

ADEN (REUTERS) - Drones belonging to the Iranian-aligned Houthi movement on Thursday (Jan 10) attacked a Yemeni government military parade in the southern province of Lahaj, killing several people, Saudi and Houthi media reported.
The attack comes as the United Nations tries to get peace talks going between the Houthis who control northern Yemen and the Saudi-backed government of Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi by overseeing a limited ceasefire in the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah.
The parade was taking place inside a military base in al-Anad district when an explosion rocked the area, eyewitnesses said.
They said high-ranking officers including Yemen's deputy chief of staff had been wounded.
Saudi-owned Al Arabiya TV said five people had been killed and several injured.
Houthi Al-Masirah TV said the attack had been aimed at "the leadership of the invaders".

A military source said the focus of the attack had been the podium where senior officers were sitting.
It was unclear if officers were present from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, leaders of a Sunni Muslim Arab coalition that intervened in Yemen in 2015 to try to restore Hadi's government, which had been ousted from the capital Sanaa in 2014.
The Houthis said in November they were halting drone and missile attacks on Saudi Arabia, the UAE and their Yemeni allies, but tensions have risen recently over how to implement the UN-sponsored deal in Hodeidah.
The Houthis and the Saudi-backed government agreed to stop fighting and withdraw forces at peace talks in Sweden in December following months of diplomacy and Western pressure.
The ceasefire only applies to Hodeidah province but the British ambassador to Yemen, Michael Aron, tweeted on Thursday that an escalation anywhere in Yemen "goes against the spirit of the Stockholm agreement".
Implementation of the deal, the first breakthrough in peace efforts in five years, has stalled as the sides disagree on who will control the city of Hodeidah after the withdrawal.
Yemen descended into war after pro-democracy unrest forced late former president Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down.
Hadi was elected to head a transitional government but after the Houthis took Sanaa he went into exile in Saudi Arabia.
The Houthis deny getting any help from Iran and say they are waging a revolution against corruption.

Yemen soldiers killed in Houthi drone attack on base

A drone attack on a Yemeni government base by the rebel Houthi movement has reportedly killed six soldiers.
The drone exploded above a podium at al-Anad base, in the southern province of Lahj, where high-ranking officers and officials were watching a parade.
Medics said army deputy chief of staff Gen Saleh al-Zindani and Lahj governor Ahmed al-Turki were among those hurt.
A Houthi-run TV channel said the rebels had targeted personnel from the Saudi-led coalition backing the government.
The attack threatens to derail UN peace efforts, which last month saw both sides agree to a ceasefire around the lifeline Red Sea port of Hudaydah, which is crucial to the delivery of aid supplies.

A Houthi military source told Al-Masirah TV that Thursday's attack targeted "invaders" - an apparent reference to coalition personnel - and "mercenaries" at al-Anad, which which is about 60km (40 miles) north of the second city of Aden.
It was carried out after "careful monitoring of gatherings and movements" at the base, he added.
Video footage of the incident showed the drone approaching the parade ground rapidly and at low altitude before exploding above the covered VIP podium.
"It was a very strong explosion and we could feel the pressure," local journalist Nabil al-Qaiti, who was at the parade, told the Associated Press.
"The drone was packed with explosives," he added.

Medics at the Ibn Khaldoun hospital in the nearby city of Houta told AFP news agency that six soldiers were killed and 12 people were injured in the attack.
They said the wounded include Gen Zindani, Mr Turki, intelligence chief Brig-Gen Mohammed Saleh Tamah, and senior army commander Fadel Hasan.
Chief of staff Gen Abdullah al-Nakhi was also at the base when the drone struck, but there are conflicting reports about whether he was hurt.
It was not immediately clear if any coalition military officials were present.

Later, Houthi military spokesman Gen Yehia Sari announced that a new kind of drone had been used.
The Qasef-2K, he added, was designed to blow up about 20m (65ft) off the ground, sending shrapnel towards a target.
Saudi-owned TV channels described the drone as "Iranian made".
Iran has denied supplying weapons to the rebels. But a UN panel of experts said last year that the Houthis' Qasef-1 drone was "virtually identical in design, dimensions, and capability" to Iran's Ababil-T drone.
Yemeni Information Minister Moammar al-Eryani tweeted that "the crime of targeting the base will not go unanswered".
The attack, he added, showed the Houthis did "not believe in the language of peace" and "only understand the language of weapons".

The attack comes a day after the UN special envoy to Yemen said the warring parties had largely stuck to the ceasefire around Hudaydah.
However, Martin Griffiths told the UN Security Council that "substantial progress" was needed before further talks could be held on ending the war.
Yemen has been devastated by a conflict that escalated in early 2015, when the Houthis seized control of much of the west of the country and forced President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi to flee abroad.
Alarmed by the rise of a group they saw as an Iranian proxy, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and seven other Arab states intervened in an attempt to restore the government.
At least 6,800 civilians have been killed and 10,700 injured in the fighting, according to the UN. Thousands more civilians have died from preventable causes, including malnutrition, disease and poor health.
