Not all rich people bid recklessly for COEs. Many of us got rich by getting value for money, instead of burning through cash like what the mass media portrays us to behave. Many people have little savings and wealth because they blow their cash on luxury consumer items to impress people. Most rich people park the bulk of their wealth in wealth accumulating instruments, and spend only a small fraction of it on luxury consumer items, which includes COEs.
