actually just been to a mei mei barber. was surprised she asked me whether i wanted an "ARMANI" stylo-milo hairstyle for the slightly higher price of $8 instead of the regular $5.

what the hell is armani? so i passed. would there be a gucci or prada or ck hair style??

I remember some barber shops in the past had complimentary ear digging service for every haircut. Sometimes they would also give you a good shoulder and neck massage.

My friend used to go to a police station for a free(?) or very cheap haircut. Not sure if there are free/cheap barbers in police stations now.

Nowadays the traditional barber shops are dying out. My barber downstairs, where I had cut my hair for nearly two decades, recently had no choice but to close down because:

1) Competition from QB House, EC House and CB House etc. (even these '10 min House' barbers are victims to #2...)
2) Aggressive barber price cutting war from Snip Avenue and other similar franchise barber shop-hair salon hybrids. You can't beat $2.80 for a haircut.
3) PAP Town Council scumbags jacking up shop rents after en blocs and lift upgrading.

Gone are the days where you can chat with the barber and he/she instinctively knows what haircut you want. Nowadays, you get the soulless franchise barber shops whose employee barbers are young punks that provide a shitty service. Also their roster changes daily or weekly, so good luck to you if you want a fixed barber.

Surely the lowest is charged by this hair salon next to NTUC Kang Kah. It's only $.80. Yes, repeat, eighty cents.

But there is a caveat. For members only. Otherwise, it cuts men's hair for $3.80. But at this price you rank after everybody in the queue who has more than a haircut to wait for.

when u thought that was cheap, there was even cheaper one. at redhill mrt, there's a salon shop which offers $3.60 per cut! wow! this one is super fast. done in less than 5 mins!! when u think that's cheap, then come along another even cheaperer at clementi central. couldn't see clearly the price as it was obstructed by a long, long queue. was told it was below $3.

Records of fighting were almost a must in old PA recruitment. However, must be just school or police warning records. You must win the fights (beat up people) and the cases you argued with disciplinary authorities to walk away free or at most with warnings. What kind of sec. sch. boys fit that criteria? Of course mostly gangsters.

Records of losing fights (getting beaten up) or losing cases and juvenile criminal records would almost certainly disqualify one from police. That was LKY policy. It was gradually phased out after GCT became PM and totally phased out after LHL became PM.

In my times in the force, beating up people were common. A constable just passed out from PA was called Sir respectfully and fearfully by the public. Now, police wearing corporal and sergeant ranks have to call the public Sir and politely request them to co-operate. Police beating up people in is now history. In the old days, someone got beaten by police and complained had to prove excessivce force. Nowadays, police have to prove necessary force. So, police nowadays would avoid beating up people and rather let criminals run and issue warrant later. Police nowadays have no fighting experience to be confident at it anyway.

It's a dangerous matter, to the police, when beating up people. It has to be executed confidently, cleanly and safely. Because police are armed, in a fight if the firearms are snatched, it could be fatal. Don't think that just because of uniform or warrant card criminals surrender and let police beat them up.

We'll have to tip him off to avoid going there during the raiding hours. If you don't know them and they don't take you as friends, bigger cases can't be solved and resolved as efficiently.
