The network is vast and they have penetrated the upper echelons of the business and political elite of every country that is allied with the United States. In so doing they indirectly promote US global hegemony.

That is not 100% correct. While there are very many influential and elite members as you call them, these days more and more ' common folk ' eg minor businessmen, small contractors and engineers are invited to join, well at least here in Singapore.

One of their tenets is that they are obliged to help one another unless in doing so it would jeopardise themselves directly or indirectly. So those on the lower strata, if they are members would stand to benefit. For example a contractor would likely get a major renovation job awarded to him if the owner or developer was a fellow mason all other things being equal of course.

How far up the ladder one may go is difficult to predict but each time you are helped , you gain, and there is much help rendered to one another.
