How can HDB flats be considered proper housing where 80+ percent of our population who live in it:

1. Have no privacy. Any joker who doesn't live there is free to walk in and out of your block, loiter around, smoke cigarettes, drink beer urinate in the lift and commit crime/molest; and there is nothing to prevent it from happening.

2. Any loan shark can just walk up to your door and splash paint and there is nothing to stop them.

3. Anyone can go spraypaint and burn your new car in the carpark and there is nothing you can do about it.

After paying so much and this is what you get?

Those aren't called "homes". They are referred to as "Pigeon Holes" for the very reasons you have described.

If you feel that Sinkie govt pigeon holes are not value for money, don't buy one! Ownership of a pigeon hole is a lifestyle choice. It's not compulsory.

60s and 70s---they were called pigeon holes.

80s and 90s---they were called beehives.

2000s--they are called antholes .

Sam, I agree it's not compulsory.

I sold my 4-room flats recently and in fact I don't wish to buy another one again.

But I have a spouse with 2 kids less than 7 years old.

To rent a flat from open market is too expensive for me.

To rent from HDB which is much cheaper, I have to wait for 36 months from the day I sold my flat.

To migrate, I'm not ready yet.

Any sound advice from you whereby I can stay in SG without buying a HDB flat?

Yours is the BEST analogy for HDB housing BY FAR.

I'd like to ask you the most basic of questions... why do you want to stay in SG?

Many of us are 'sons of the soil', that is; we were born here. "what to do, it already, happened".....:D

If everyone stayed where they were born, we'd all still be living in the Serengeti plains of Africa.

The total land area on the planet is 148,647,000 sq km. Singapore occupies a mere 710.2 km or 0.000478% of the total available land mass.

Why so many people would want to be squeezed like sardines into that shithole for the rest of their lives is really beyond me.

The human spirit is supposed to seek liberation rather than confinement. Being "born here" is a sorry excuse for insular, myopic behaviour.

Not many are fortunate to traverse the world....we are of immigrant stock, the yearn to leave & go, inborn, like bedoiuns, we must move...there are many reasons for many to stay, inlcuding e.....

I could have, would have & should have gone WEST!, due to some reason personal to me I stayed...why would I want to subject myself to the kind of 'tortue' right....the 'piegeon' was about to leave the coop..at the last minute..the 'piegeon' did not, and stayed....now the horizon had changed its color & look....

No people with immigrant blood are insular..or myopic to stay...we are here due to circumstances...:p

many young blokes who have just completed ns full time can't leave sg willy nilly. they don't have the means nor the financial support from family. and there are many who are stupid enough to get themselves tied up by sticky needy women and/or lovers that they defer all decisions to them. man up guys! (cut your ties and) explore where no man has explored before.

Going abroad with money is for wealthy investors and retirees. Youngsters should venture abroad for money. Unlike many non-English speaking monolinguistic nationals, most Singaporeans have many places to choose from without language barriers, Australia, Canada, China, HK, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Malaysia, NZ, South Africa, Taiwan, UK, USA etc.

hi there

1. bro, allow me to "borrow" a statment from our stateman: go and see your mp hahaha!
2. proper homes: my foot, sinkies are living in air and yet sinkies pay heavy for the concrete enclosure.
3. tell it to hdb and ah horse!

It's not that I want..but don't know how to get out..

If you can do your sum correctly, sometimes it is cheaper to rent than to buy.
Like for myself. The first ten years I had been paying about $2200 instalment for my condo which in fact I am actually servicing my interest. So think about it. Why not rent one now and when prices down go for it. There is a cycle, every 12 years, so the next one will be around 2020.

Will putting a fence and a security guard make it a home then?
