According to José Rizal, the Spanish not just abused the Pinoys but also discouraged trade and so was responsible for for crippling Philippines indeed. Not like the great and wonderful Hokkiens that are always pro trade. Well the natives chose to gang up with Spanish in Hokkien revolts against Spanish.
