You forgot, philippines get crippled by super typhoons every decade or so and super volcano eruptions like pinatubo on top of the regular earthquakes. If you had planted palm oil, which has a life cycle of 25 years, it will be destoryed before its full cycle is complete.
Plus most land are owned by descendants of spanish conquistadors.

I am sure you will agree with Jose Rizal on hot weather is another reason for Pinoys being lazy.

According to José Rizal, the Spanish not just abused the Pinoys but also discouraged trade and so was responsible for for crippling Philippines indeed. Not like the great and wonderful Hokkiens that are always pro trade. Well the natives chose to gang up with Spanish in Hokkien revolts against Spanish. So ultimately the natives are responsible themselves for crippling their own country.
