A 28-year-old man of African descent, holding a Hong Kong identity card and unemployed, was arrested for murder after fleeing to mainland China following the brutal killing of his 35-year-old Hong Kong girlfriend in Ngau Tau Kok.
The victim, surnamed Tam, was found dead on December 30 (Tue) last year inside a 250-square-foot open-plan public housing unit at Lok Wah South Estate’s Hei Wah House.
Police discovered her body hidden between the mattress and bed frame. Her head was wrapped in a towel and her body covered with clothes.
Forensic examination revealed over a dozen fatal head wounds caused by a hard object, resulting in skull depression fractures and massive bleeding. Her hands and feet also showed multiple bruises.
The couple had been dating for six months. Police believe the crime stemmed from a heated argument over relationship issues.
The unit showed no obvious bloodstains or signs of struggle on the surface, suggesting the suspect deliberately cleaned the scene and disposed of the murder weapon and some of the victim’s belongings, though officers later recovered partial items from the building’s rubbish bins.
The flat was without electricity, believed to be due to unpaid bills. Inside, authorities also found the corpses of three cats and one dog, suspected to have been killed by the suspect, with their deaths now under investigation.
The case began as a high-risk missing person’s report on the evening of December 29 (Mon) after the victim’s 67-year-old mother could not contact her daughter, who had a history of suicidal tendencies.
The victim had told family on December 28 (Sun) that she was going to her boyfriend’s flat to collect her belongings before returning home.
On the evening of December 29 (Mon), the suspect crossed the land border and escaped to the mainland. Hong Kong police promptly requested assistance from mainland authorities, who located and detained him.
On the afternoon of January 16, he was handed over at the Shenzhen Bay Port and immediately arrested on suspicion of murder.
He remains in custody and will face one count of murder at Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Court next Monday.
The East Kowloon Regional Crime Headquarters continues to investigate the motive and any possible accomplices.
It is understood that the man is from Chad.
