有指陳同佳的父親最初擔心兒子自首或會被台灣判處死刑，惟經過多次與律師和兒子傾談後，亦同意自首的決定。陳出獄後將與家人短暫相聚，然後赴台自首，惟確定日期待定。陳希望對死者潘曉穎的父母致歉，冀獲得原諒。
曾探望獄中陳同佳的蔣麗芸今早(18日)接受東網查詢，未有正面確認陳將會赴台自首的消息。她稱最後決定應由當事人回應，相信很快會清楚去向。她指每個人都會做錯事，只要有悔改都應給予重生的機會；每個人亦應承擔法律後果。
她個人認為，陳的決定是對死者及其家人作了「答覆」。但他的決定如何，與目前政府面對的問題無關，修例風波是政治及社會問題所引發。

【星島日報報道】行政長官今日收到現時因清洗黑錢罪在香港監獄服刑的陳同佳的來信，表示已經決定刑滿後就其涉嫌的殺人案到台灣自首，並請特區政府協助安排相關手續。
台灣當局於去年１２月３日已向陳同佳就該案發出通緝令，並於當時表示陳所涉及的罪行的追訴權時效為３０年。台灣刑事警察局今日已收到香港警務處發出的函件。函件清楚轉達了陳同佳自首的意願，同時向台方表示港方會協助陳同佳作出相關安排，並樂意向台方提供一切所需的合法可行協助。
在陳同佳的刑事檢控方面，香港律政司並無足以控告陳同佳在台灣涉嫌殺人的證據。律政司經充分及全面考慮了香港警方調查及搜集所得的證據後，控告陳同佳在香港干犯洗黑錢罪。陳其後被定罪及被判監２９個月，現時正在服刑。對於陳同佳在台灣涉嫌犯的罪，香港法庭並無管轄權，香港有關當局也不可能將陳同佳續押或向他追訴他涉嫌在台灣所犯的罪行。
