Police have a pretty good idea of the man they are looking for after he fled following a high-speed car chase in Kwun Tong early today … because he left his wallet behind in the vehicle.

Police say the 19-year-old culprit abandoned his white Lexus – and his girlfriend – when he fled on foot following a 3km high-speed car chase that ended in Kwun Tong.

During the five-minute chase, the driver jumped at least six red lights and drove on the wrong side of the road, from Ngau Tau Kok to Kwun Tong via Sau Mau Ping, speeding well beyond the 50km/h limit, police say.

The driver was identified after he left behind his wallet with his identity card in the car, according to a police source.

“An initial investigation shows the man is the holder of a learner’s licence but it has been expired,” the source said. “We believe he is also the owner of the vehicle.”

Police arrested the driver’s 22-year-old girlfriend who tried to escape with her boyfriend, but lost her footing and fell on the ground.

Officers also seized a meat cleaver wrapped with bandages in the car. The Kwun Tong anti-triad squad is investigating.

The chase began shortly after 5.15am today when a traffic policeman noticed the car driving erratically on Ngau Tau Kok Road near Ngau Tau Kok MTR station.

The car sped away when police tried to stop and turned into Chun Wah Road, then Hong Ning Road, before running downhill on Hip Wo Street.

“In an effort to elude police, he drove on the wrong side of the road while overtaking vehicles that blocked his way,” police said.

It ran out of control, mounted on a pavement and came to a halt on Hung To Road in Kwun Tong. “The driver and his female passenger jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot,” the officer said. “The woman was caught at the scene after she lost her footing and fell to the floor.”

The woman was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon. She is being held for questioning and has not been charged.

The man was still at large late this afternoon.
