The South Island is far more scenic, less crowded, less brown skinned.

You should avoid the brown skinned. They're the ones who will attack you and steal your stuff.
The whites here are great. If you meet a racist white chances are he's from OZ.

been there 3 times in the 80s n 90s,
south island absolutely beautiful and quiet, food is quite ok, summer is nov onwards, best time to go
people are super friendly last time but when i went in 2014 auckland airport was knn 60% indians,
so things may have changed with increased competition for jobs
