SINGAPORE: Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said that attention between the football World Cup and Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is not a "zero-sum" game, and having both events this year is good for sports as a whole. He also revealed plans to screen the Youth Olympics on big screens around Singapore, with details to be announced later.
Singapore's Community Development, Youth and Sports Ministry is egging other agencies to dress their buildings in the Olympic spirit. Reflecting this spirit is Singapore's recent award as the number two Ultimate Sports City at the Sport Accord Convention in Dubai.
"It's an affirmation, you know, that people recognise now that we are a destination for sports, for sports events, for athletes and for people who want to come," said the minister. "We are one of the nodal points where you can catch the pulse of the world." In the pipeline are more grassroots events to increase buzz for the YOG among all Singaporeans.
