Faced with mounting debts from medical treatment of a tumour and unable to pay her rent, she turned to a friend, whom she got to know in the course of her work, for help.

But Alvin Zeng Weili's way of helping the 36-year-old freelance events planner was to turn her into a prostitute and taking a cut of her earnings.

Zeng, 29, would promote her sexual services online and take $50 for each customer that he secured for her. She agreed to his proposal.

He advertised her services under the alias "Jamie" and secured between 10 and 20 customers for her from December 2009 to May 2010.

Yesterday, Zeng was fined $12,000 for living off the earnings of prostitution and procurement for the purpose of prostitution.
