Hawker School– Yet Another Stupid Idea From Vivian B

Of all the dumb ideas that have come out of this PAP Govt, this is by far the dumbest of the lot.

As I’ve mentioned, street hawkers are the very manifestation of Asian culinary creativity for the working classes.

In countries such as Thailand, Vietnam or even Malaysia, Govts have generally left hawkers free to develop and flourish– and the result has been the amazing street food at exceptional prices, renowned the world over.

In Singapore, this Govt not only kicked hawkers off the streets into designated hawker centres, it regulates them, inspects them, licenses them, taxes them, forces them to pay licence fees and other fees, controls who can be hawker stall assistants, and even makes them bid competitively for hawker stall rentals.

If you leave Singaporean hawkers alone, they will innovate and they will surprise you. They will create great food without you making them go to school. After all, Satay Club sprang up all by itself in the 60′s and 70′s without Govt intervention. Instead, when the Govt intervened, everything became fake and sterile– think of Rasa Singapura and the New Satay Club, for instance.

Leave things alone, Dr B. You are a great debater. But you suck as a Minister. You sucked at MCYS, and you suck now.

Oh just great, since we are at it, why not have a toilet-cleaning diploma, street-sweeping degree course and a arang kuni-post graduate course....

But from the looks of things, we need more of a Minister-school, one that teaches what a Minister should do and talk.
This guy never fails to disappoint with his antics.

you are right i thought about it too ..same with petshop in singapore ...if you want to sell small animals you need to go "school " its a fee of about $700 for each " class ". and that " school " have many " classes " . different animals different "class " and different fee so if you want to sell rabbits , dogs , cats ...you need to go 3 "class " means how much liao ...do your maths

I don't think the person who wrote that article knows a damn thing about being in a hawker family. In family and many of my peers, the parents doesnt want the kids especially those educated ones to take over their business even though it's flourishing. The same is true the other way around kids do not want to take over their parents business. There is a good reason why all the famous stalls are disappearing after the owner retires.

And then there is a big group out there who wants to start a stall but do not have the skills to. Not sure if anyone realize this but one of the main reason why the standard of food is going down is because of the latter where pple who do not have the skills try to start a business. They end up getting most of the ingredients and sauces from the supplier and just heat it up. There is a good reason why many new stalls universally suck nowadays. Not everyone have 1 - 2 million in the bank to buy recipes from Famous Stalls.

I think the school for hawkers is a great idea. I do not think they should stop pple from opening a stall if they already have the skills, that would be really stupid but the school would provide those who wants to learn to have a place to start.

hawker school is just another goverment tactics and excuse for them to take your money ...period . if hawker school is free , then i know that the goverment intention is good

I've been in the position where my parents doesnt want us to take over and refuse to teach us how to make the food. I have a number of friends who wanted to start something but had no where to learn where to do it. A few of them took up couses in SHATEC and just end up opening stalls selling western food or Pastries. I have no idea if it is because they were not taught how to cook local food or simply because what they were taught wasn't good enough. No one else in here seem to be concern that we are going to lose a whole generation of Top local Cooks and there isn't any pple stepping up to take over. All we see these days are pple taking food and ingredients from Distributors and heating up the food. Where in the world did U think all those PRC Stall holders came from. Am I the only one who see a big problem here? Yes the school should not be able making profit but the school should also be sustainable. The most important point here is we need pple to step up and start taking over the local food culture

char , my mother is a hawker . for your infor , alot of famous hawkers are all self-taught . my mother also teach me how to cook . if you are willing to learn , im sure theres many ways for you to learn ...instead of going school .
