I believe rmaf wanted to buy the 40 odd the used kuwaiti f-18's but even then gomen cannot afford. The f-18s are similar to ones in rmaf plus low flying hours.. Kuwaits have upgraded to super hornets.
Problem with US fighter jets is you cannot anyhow modify the jets according to your whims and fancies like what rmaf did to their sukhois. Upgrades only by manufacturer or their licensed agents.
Reason SAF bought f-15s was to counter rmaf sukhois.

China says military flight off Malaysia was 'routine training' - The Online Citizen Asia
China said Wednesday a flight by 16 military aircraft over hotly contested waters off Malaysia was routine training, after the Southeast Asian nation accused Beijing of breaching its sovereignty.

Malaysia scrambled fighter jets Monday to intercept the Chinese air force transport planes that appeared off Borneo over the South China Sea, where it has overlapping territorial claims with Beijing.

The Malaysian foreign minister criticised the flight as an “intrusion” and said the government would lodge a protest with Beijing and summon the Chinese ambassador.

But a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Kuala Lumpur said the “activities are routine flight training of the Chinese air force and do not target any country”.

“According to relevant international law, Chinese military aircraft enjoy the freedom of overflight in the relevant airspace,” he said.

The planes had not entered any other country’s territorial airspace, the spokesman added in a statement.

The aircraft came within 60 nautical miles (110 kilometres) of the Malaysian part of Borneo, and did not respond to attempts to contact them, prompting Malaysia to scramble jets, according to the country’s air force.

They turned back before entering Malaysian airspace over its territorial waters.

But Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said they had entered the country’s “maritime zone” — an area that extends much further from the coast — and described the incident as a “breach of the Malaysian airspace and sovereignty”.

China has laid claim to nearly all of the South China Sea and has built numerous military outposts on small islands and atolls, angering other countries with competing claims to the waters.

Malaysia-China relations are usually warm but Monday’s incident comes after a build-up in tensions over the sea, which is home to key shipping lanes and is believed to harbour rich oil and gas deposits.

Last year, a Chinese survey ship had a long stand-off with a Malaysian oil exploration vessel off Borneo.

Other claimants in the sea include Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan.

The United States has also sent warships through the waters to assert international rights to freedom of navigation, angering China.

Where are Malaysia’s MIG29s, Su30s and F-18s? Why send a trainer aircraft BAE Hawk?

Fucking useless mats
The Hawk is not a trainer, its a light attack aircraft in the version that Malaysia bought. And most of the best RMAF equipment is stationed in Peninsula Malaysia. If you had read the article, you would have known that the PLAAF planes were flying towards Sarawak. No RMAF planes based in Peninsular Malaysia could have flown that distance and make the intercept in time. The closest RMAF base there is Labuan, which has Hawk 208s, and they are therefore the logical choice to make the intercept. Before calling mats useless, maybe you are the useless one?

What if Matland just shoot the Tiong planes down with surface to air missiles?
You need to make visual identification, which is what they do, What if it was airliners, and you shoot them down and kill hundreds of people.

They are testing the RMAF reaction time. Such a large fleet of transport planes from the PLAAF is basically a dry run for a para drop into East Malaysia.
what are the rules of engagement when it comes to air space? can the air defence unit suka suka shoot a few rounds as warning shots?

How do you shoot a few rounds? First, u need to have anti aircraft guns near the planes. Then they have to reach 26000 ft height which is what the PLAAF planes are flying at. And then you need a radar guidance system for the guns so accurate that they can shoot a few warning shots at them without hitting them. Not possible.

The international rules of engagement is to squawk them for ident. If they don't reply, then send an intercept aircraft for visual identification. If they are hostile and engage you, then you are free to engage them. If its a loss airliner on the wrong frequency, u either escort out of your airspace or you force them to land.

That is fucking bullshit. The RSAF don't give a shit about the RMAF Sukhois. The F-16s can easily deal with them. They are Block 70+ and heavily modified by the Jews, much better then what the USAF has. The F-15 is for the defence of Brunei.

the hawk 208 is actually a versatile, good (and cheap) choice for the rmaf to cover territories in borneo as the geography is huge, coastlines long, and seaborne patrol requirements intensive and extensive. up to now, the only major threats in east malaysia are from insurgents north of sabah, pirates and smugglers along the coast, foreign fishing boats off the coast. friendly terms with the failippines and indonesia help to tone down need for high tier air assets. hawk 208 can be used for many roles with a much lower cost: fighter, interdiction, air defense, air support, ground attack, patrol, anti-smuggling, air presence, plus it’s easier to train pilots for this aircraft, and the need for a reasonable quantity to cover vast territories. sometimes, a low tier fighter is all that is needed to show air presence and defend air space. don’t need a high tier fighter-interceptor like the typical air superiority aircraft when countless regular mundane sorties are required to interdict in remote areas. however, this pla incursion of not 1 but 16.9 planes may change that (16.9 as at least 1 awac-type plane is further behind monitoring and controlling the incursion), especially when more future incursions are expected. may be a squadron of air superiority interceptors may pose a bigger deterrence if plan shows up with a carrier. all conjectures so far, but situation will escalate when plaaf and plan are involved. they are gunning for any escalation and (weaker) neighbors to tempt fate. bunch of backyard bullies.
