had you ever written an autograph before?

Little autograph booklets were all the rage in my Pr. 6 as we knew we might not have the chance to many of us ever again. It hard cover with quality paper pages colorfully designed usually in shades of pastels and for the girls, they liked those with flower or fairy tale designs. After PSLE with no more serious lessons we'd run around the class exchanging autographs and playing games like chess, reversi, animal chess, battle game, aeroplane game, snake-and-ladder etc.

The battle game was my favorite, I think not available anymore nowadays. It had two versions, the land-only version and the sea-land-air version. Strictly a game among Chinese boys. Girls wouldn't be interested and non-Chinese wouldn't know how to read the board and pieces.

The most graphic I wrote was on my childhood sweetheart's autograph book, "I love you to the end of the sea. Time will pass and we'll be free. Time will come when we'll marry happily. Promise me that you'll wait for me." (That was a boy's way of stamping his claim on a girl, on her autograph book for all to see.)

Any other boy daring to write such thing on her autograph book would be looking for a duel against me. As her autograph book was passed around, the whole class was filled with laughters, giggles and teases her face was filled with blushes.

After PSLE, I went to VS (all-dick) and she went to TKGS (all-chick). We continued our puppy-love dating on weekends since we lived quite near to each other, just a few bus-stops distance. She joined girl guides and I joined boy scouts. There was this happy occasion that some teachers-in-charge aranged VS scouts and TKGS guides to have a joint BBQ campfire at ECP. By Sec. 3, it was well past puberty calling, it was already hormone overflowing and physically developed and ready. We found time to slip away without anybody noticing and exchanged virginity raw that night in the bush.

After we were done, we reported back both soiled and muddied. We explained it away that we went for a stroll and chat but unfortunately, slipped and fell. Years later, after I joined the police force, I learnt that I could have been charged for underage statutory rape for that.

Hey, thats great you sealed your puppy love. Would've been a let down if you didn't go all the way. This is what fond memories of our growing up years are all about. As for me, I exchanged virginity with an older girl (I was 16, she was 18), but in a more comfortable setting. Her room. Parents were out, only her brother was home.

Technically, she was older than me too, born same year but 3 months earlier. Regrettably, I coudn't keep my promise on her autograph book to marry her. I had NS to serve and she was going to NUS. Frankly, there was a gap of inferiority complex. Last we met, kissed and said goodbye was when I left for US. This was our song.

Puppy love seldom last anyway. Paths are usually different, priorities change. Also a girl joins the workforce earlier than us, we have NS, then uni. Thats a nice song by The Manhattans. Ours was Careless Whisper by that gay george michael.

That's a great song too. We first heard it together at YMCA McDonalds over breakfast (no more Mc there now) and we trekked all the way up Orchard Road to Far East Plaza till we found the the cassette of the album Make It Big that contained that song in full-length version. Another great and unforgettable one for us was Up Where We Belong from the movie An Officer And A Gentleman that we watched together in Prince Cinema.

We got the soundtrack cassette easily in the Prince shopping mall. I promised her I'd be the officer and gentleman for her. I was too impatient in a confluence of circumstances and opportunities and left the police force before any chance to make senior officer rank. Once again, I failed her.

yeah, I remember some music shops on the ground floor of Prince. I bought a few LPs from there. Up Where We Belong is a very nice song. At least yours was true romance and you have fond memories, but you had to do what you had to do. Like I said, paths and priorities change along life's journey. There should be no regrets, I am sure she is a happily married woman today. Mine was just a short fling, it was more of a crush. I went to JC after that and forgot about her. Maybe I should find her on facebook......

You did LP and SP? 45rpm and 33 1/3rpm? Cool. I wasn't really into that. I made do with cassette tape. One of my uncles had a Sansui. My buddy's father had a Kenwood. Those were classy furniture cabinet style hi-fi sets. Those days, if you had a cabinet TV and a cabinet hi-fi in your living room, you were somebody.

Mostly 33-1/3rpm. I still have them today. Also inherited quite a few 45s from my aunts and uncles (mostly singles from the beatles, hollies). I also bought a lot of cassettes those days. I liked to have the shop record selected songs from a list, so I can have all my favourite songs on one cassette instead of buying a few (this shop at Thomson Plaza used to do that). And the ideal choice was on a metal tape. Today, sadly I don't own a turntable (but I am thinking of getting one). My father had a Technic set, with speakers about 3ft high. He used to blast Jim Reeves Christmas songs during Christmas.

i exchanged autographs with my class monitoress and i was the head monitor and head prefect. after PSLE, we organised a simple picnic at mt faber. it was so simplistic and pure. each brought their own food such as sandwiches and their own drink tumbler of ribena. (i dunno why but ribena seemed to be the national pri sch official drink.) we brought simple games like "chatek" which we would take turn to kick and count. who ever reached the set number of kicks won the game. for forfeit, the loser would have to throw the chatek to the winner which he would kick the oncoming chatek with his leg with all his might sending the missile far for the loser to catch. if he missed, then he would repeat. game was considered over once the thrown and kicked chatek was caught by the loser and the whole game repeat with a new number of chatek kick to achieve. this was an acquired and practised skill where the chatek kicker could alternate each right or left leg to kick. his turn own be over once he missed the chatek that fell to the ground and his number of successful kicks were noted n continued to count from there when his turn come around again.

then there was "rounder" which was like a mini softball game. if the ground was sandy, a circle would be drawn on the ground in a triangular arrangement. if it was turfed ground, then a slipper was place for each of the 3 bases. the game was divided into 2 team: the hitter vs the thrower.
it was just like how softball was played except instead of bat, we would use any make-do stick or even a slipper or just bare hand. the ball was a soft plastic colorful ball which was cost about 10c and was the same kind used for hantam bola.

withe the thrower team of players spaced out behind the thrower to catch hit ball. if any caught the ball, then the hitter player would be "out" and the next hitter player took over. when the player hit the ball, he had to start running around the 3 bases. to safe himself he had to step on a base. if not, once the catcher caught the ball, he could aim and shoot him. if the ball hit him, he would be out.

every child game last time seemed to come with a fortfeit or punishment. for the rounder game, all the losers would have to face the fortfeit by putting their hand stretched out. the winner team players would take turn to aim and try to hit his hand with the ball. could be quite painful when hit.
