Spring time, millions of tons of ice are melting and moving down stream, and some can be too huge and jam or crushing or slamming the bridges over the river.
PLA used to let air force practice bombing on the river just to serve dual purpose = training + breaking ice to protect bridges. They are shattering the ice to ensure they are small enough pieces to pass under the bridge pillars.
This is however bad for the fish etc.
OBK for the fish.

Specialists reported: they have successfully blasted ice on the Amur river, the Far East of Russia. But why do they do this? Ice blasting is a preventive measure for bridge protection and avoiding ice jams formation. Quite spectacular!
