China says it has found that the Great Wall is more than twice as long as it was thought to be.
China's State Administration of Cultural Heritage said on Tuesday that the world's longest structure
stretches 21,196 kilometers.
The wall was built by successive dynasties to defend against invasion by northern ethnic minorities.
Three years ago, the administration said the wall was 8,851 kilometers long. The administration
later looked more closely at structures and ruins of the wall.
The Great Wall was registered as a World Heritage site in 1987. But much of it has been damaged
by wind and rain. A Chinese government project team plans to repair and reinforce such parts.
