Great disconnect on definition of corruption by CPIB, Subordinate Court & High Court

Confuseous

First it was the former CNB chief, Ng Boon Gay, who was acquitted of corruption charges for awarding lucrative IT contracts in exchange for sexual favors. Then it is former NUS law professor Tey Tsun Hang's turn to be acquitted for giving good grades in exchange for sex. It begs the question: why is there such a great disconnect between the CPIB's definition of corruption, to the Subordinate Court's and the High Court's? It is understandable that law enforcement is open to interpretation, but there ought to be some consistency and common consensus in what is outright wrong, and there is no way a suspect charged and hauled up to be shamed in public could be acquitted. We thought Ng Boon Gay's acquittal is a one-off because it is rare anyone can get off the hook when they are charged by a public prosecutor - especially when it is the almighty Corrupt Practice Investigation Bureau.

Re: Great disconnect on definition of corruption by CPIB, Subordinate Court & High Co

It was a big joke when Tey Tsun Hang was convicted for 'sex for grades'. Any average intelligence person could see that the whole thing was trumped up. The main prosecutor witness denied that she need help to boost her grades and her grade proved it. And she said that she was in love. He was probably a sex maniac. And he didn't give her the higher grade that the CPIB had charged him for. Where was the 'sex for grade'?
The judge who decided for the prosecutor is the biggest clown of all. Imagine him attending international conferences and his foreign counterparts laughed at him.

AGC ? They have a critical role to play. CPIB can arrest and charge their accused persons. But they need clearance from AGC before proceeding.

For a CPIB case to go to court, at least 6 chaps involved in recommending next course of action. IO is the first layer then his supervisor before onward submission to DD Invest, D Invest and DCPIB. File on reaching AGC will be assigned to a DPP. Before AG sees the IP at least 2 others would have done so. Was there groupthink?

Ex Chief Justice condemned Prof Tey book

Prof Tey reported to NUS Dean and investigation was launched
1 month before Prof Tey was arrested, Ex AG was promoted to CJ.

Prof Tey continued to receive full salary from NUS and NUS found no wrong and all students were graduated.

if that his the case, why prof Tey was charged?

after convicted Prof Tey, Tan Siong Thye was promoted to Supreme court judge

Yes, groupthink indeed. Someone told them to do Tey in.

In Tey's case, someone told AGC to do him in. Then the order went down ...and CPIB was nominated to do the hunt. NUS participated in it as well. Such case could have been handled as an admin matter but it decided, to set a precedent, by calling the CPIB in.

i beg to differ, why NUS? If so why NUS bother to pay him full salary till his conviction?

Innocent till proven guilty.

Just curious if Siva Shanmugam would have come to the same verdict as TST. And if latter would have exonerated NBG.

Have you guys considered that a real conviction is not necessary? Just bring on a charge and trump it up in mass media. The final verdict is not important because the person would have been destroyed/removed in the process. Case in point, NBG may have walked scott free, but can you safely say that he was unscathed? For the professor, even if he was found to be not guilty, the character assasination would have already been done and whatever objective met.
