Singapore Seeks Public Input For National Day Rally 2010
Source: Government of Singapore Posted on: 23rd August 2010

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will be making his annual National Day Rally (NDR) Speech on 29 August, during which he will address key challenges and future directions for Singapore.

REACH will conduct a feedback exercise to gather views from the public from 29 August to 10 September 2010, through a combination of traditional and new media channels.

A dedicated microsite (www.reach.gov.sg/ndrsg) will go “live” on 27 August 2010 to provide a one-stop portal for net-savvy and overseas Singaporeans to access the latest NDR Speech updates, catch the live webcast of PM’s speech on 29 August and engage in discussion on issues raised during the NDR through the discussion forum.

A new feature, “Conversations with MPs”, will be launched where various Members of Parliaments (MPs) from the REACH Supervisory Panel will pen their thoughts on NDR, and engage netizens online.

As part of REACH’s focus on new media and digital engagement, the REACH main website (www.reach.gov.sg) will be concurrently launched with a fresh new look and new community-focused features, such as a “Like” button for netizens to indicate the articles and contributors’ postings that resonate with them.

To promote community moderation, contributors’ postings with more “Likes” will be ranked higher and be more prominently placed, instead of the typical chronological sequence for discussion threads.

More social sharing and community features are being planned for the next stage of REACH website revamp.

Other forms of new media engagement include live updates and real-time discussions on the REACH Facebook and REACH channels, where members of the public can use the hashtag #ndrsg to follow the speech and “tweet” their views, as well as e-Townhall webchats in English and Chinese chaired by REACH Supervisory Panel members.

Traditional and face-to-face engagement remains a key component of the NDR feedback exercise. This year, a key highlight of our NDR engagement exercise will be a Public Forum scheduled for the evening of 30 August 2010, Monday at the Grassroots Club. The forum will be chaired by Minister for National Development, Mr Mah Bow Tan and hosted by REACH Chairman, Dr Amy Khor.

Radio talkshows in English, Chinese and Malay for callers to pose questions and give feedback will take place on 30 August right after the Rally. A telephone poll to gather feedback and sentiments on NDR sentiments will be carried out immediately after the Rally.

REACH also welcomes all public feedback through its other engagement channels, such as SMS, email, post and fax.

Another key feedback exercise will be a youth forum organized by REACH’s newly appointed Youth Ambassadors and chaired by Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and REACH Chairman, Dr Amy Khor.

Co-organised with SIM Global Education, the forum will take place on 8 September 2010, Wednesday at the Singapore Institute of Management.

Dr Amy Khor said, “The National Day Rally Feedback Exercise is a key annual event for REACH to engage the community on issues close to their hearts. Through providing a wide array of engagement platforms, we hope to facilitate lively dialogue amongst Singaporeans online and face-to-face.

The development of new community focused feedback features on the new REACH website such as “Conversations with Members of Parliament” underscores REACH’s ongoing commitment to encourage quality and constructive discourse amongst netizens.

Traditional platforms such as dialogues remain a key highlight of REACH’s efforts to engage citizens who prefer a faceto- face approach. We look forward to Singaporeans from all walks of life as well as overseas Singaporeans actively sharing their views and feedback with us”
