Hawker Helper Ran Illegal Gambling Ring To Pay For Daughter’s Medical Fees

By Daphne Yow - January 17, 2019

Hawker Stall Helper Faces 5 Years’ Jail & $288,000 Fine

A hawker stall helper, in a bid to come up with money to pay for his daughter’s medical fees, has unfortunately headed down the dark road of crime. 68-year-old Lim Teng Kok had collected $10 million to $20 million in illegal 4D and TOTO bets over 9 years. This was after his daughter was diagnosed with kidney failure and Hepatitis C.

One of the largest illegal gambling syndicates in Singapore

In Dec 2018, the court heard that Mr Lim had at least 16 agents working under him and earned a total of $290,000 to $349,000 in commission from his role in an online gambling ring. The gambling ring is said to be one of the largest syndicates uncovered in Singapore to date, as reported by TODAY.

Donated his kidney to his daughter in 2009

According to Mr Lim’s defence lawyer, Mr Lim began helping a friend collect 4D bets in 2005.

Back then, Mr Lim had been earning about $1,800/month as a hawker stall helper when his daughter was diagnosed with kidney failure and Hepatitis C. She was hospitalised for 44 days that year, and Mr Lim felt he could not cope with the medical bills even with help from social welfare organisations. Eventually, Mr Lim donated one of his kidneys to his daughter in 2009. On top of these costs, he claims that he also bore the medical expenses of both his mother & wife, who had pneumonia in 2011 among other conditions.

During the Dec 2018 court hearing, he broke down, shouting “Stop it!” as his lawyer recounted the financial stress he was under — all of which apparently led him to crime.

$24,000/month fine to be paid from 1 Feb 2019

On 15 Jan 2019 during the sentencing, District Judge Ng Peng Hong took into consideration that Mr Lim was a “loving father”, among other factors. Mr Lim was eventually sentenced to 5 years’ jail and an extremely heavy fine of $288,000. His lawyer successfully applied for him to pay his fine in installments of $24,000/month each, starting from 1 Feb 2019.

He will also start serving his sentence on 12 Feb 2019 after spending Chinese New Year with his family.

Tempering justice with compassion

Mr Lim’s lawyer had previously urged the court to temper justice with compassion as Mr Lim was in poor health. The fact that Mr Lim had committed the crime out of fatherly love for his ill daughter has also sparked a debate amongst netizens on whether his sentence was too harsh. For instance, this netizen was concerned whether Mr Lim would be able to pay the S$288,000 fine given his situation.

From what I know , if he approach social worker, his daughter medical fee could be totally free.

Good Father.
At least, so far 100% of the votes think so.

Why?
Because we know in our heart that we don't have a social security net for less-fortunates too fall back on.

Using the logic to justify paying our ministars millions, the government should increase help to the poor so that they will not succumb to crimes.

If that logic is sound to pay ministars, it should be sound to help sinkees too. After all, we are all humans.

Thank goodness we don't have a social security net for such dead end emotional cases. If not we end up like ang mor lands where the whole system is broken. the ppl pay n don't get the services bcos these parasites eat up everything n medical corporations get enriched even more. As I said, wat is the point of the daughter being kept alive? She is suffering, have no economic value, n kept alive to sustain her father's emotional needs. If this is a welfare state, tax payers have to pay for these emotional needs n there is no benefit to society. At a cost to the middle class. To those who say he is a 'good' father, please donate n help his cause. No need state support. N no need to burden unwilling tax payers. The working n middle class have their own problems.
