SINGAPORE: Four young Singaporeans were awarded the President’s Scholarship in a ceremony at the Istana on Thursday (Aug 15).

The recipients this year are Mr Muhammad Dhafer, Mr John Chua Je En, Mr Siow Mein Yeak, Yue and Midshipman Allison Tan Sue Min.

Mr Dhafer will pursue a liberal arts degree at Stanford University, an area of study the former Raffles Institution student believes will expose him to different fields.

“I hope to get an understanding of how data analytics and computer science can be used to improve public policy, and also to link that with areas of humanities, because I think this is a new area of public policy where we’re focusing on how technological changes will affect the way our government serves the people as well,” he said.

Serving the people is something Mr Dhafer has been doing since he was a teenager.

In secondary school, Mr Dhafer would volunteer on an ad-hoc basis. When he entered junior college, however, volunteering became a weekly undertaking for Mr Dhafer, who would tutor children at the Pertapis Children’s Home.

This, he said, was because he wanted to form a connection with the people he was helping.

“I think this is extremely important especially in community service work. Because you’re not only looking at one part of the problem, you’re looking at these people and being able to understand them is the core purpose of actually community service work. And I think that gives you a better understanding of who they are and what they value. And these are things that will help you to connect with them better,” he told CNA.

Let it be known that this Mr Muhammad Dhafer is another "chap cheng kia" like our Macik......

In Islam, when you offer donations, help, assistance and volunteer, you must not make it public. The lesser others know of you contributions the more your reward hereafter...unless you prefer the earthly reward.

President post should be made permanently for malays only. Just to remind the immigrant communities where the island is located.

Until the Brits revived Singapore, Singapore was mostly uninhabited. So, nearly everyone, including the various m&d ethnic groups, had no idea where Singapore was located.

Bullshit!

Moslems love praying in public in a huge group as a show of cultural strength. They also insist on their women wearing islamic headgear not for piety, but as a sign of identity. And moslems are known to insist on policing their own in public to wear islamic attire and eat halal, while telling people that muslims should have the 'freedom' to choose.

We've been taught that Sir Stamford Raffles founded Singapore in 1819. But what was life in Singapore like before the colonial era?

It was part of the Sultanate of Johor.

Stinkiepore is entirely Malay territory as much as Hong Kong is Canto/Yue territory. Or Korea is Hangook territory.

Don't come and confuse people lah.
Praying is a form religious duty not good deeds done.

This shows tiny stinkiepore does not provide enough room for its native inhabitants to pray. More Mosques need to be built, or the sultan of Johor can take over rulership of Stinkiepore. With abundant space in Johor, there would be no shortage of Mosques for Muslims to pray.

Stinkie chinks should not object to the Sultan of Johor taking over Stinkiepore.

Don't tell me chinks love Ah Loong's hereditary dictatorship over a constitutional monarchy like in Malaysia.

Even better we should have a Malay Sultanate! Do away with the present system!

Stinkiepore was part of the Sultanate of Johor.

The Sultan of Johor can claim Stinkiepore anytime he wants.

Chinks and Nehs can go back to their respective countries. No place for a dynastic dictatorship of the Lee fami-lee in this modern world.

Not all Chinks and Ah nehs must be repatriated to their respective homelands. Those who believe in Ketuanan Melayu should be allowed to stay put . Only those with dynastic intentions and superior complexes must go! Many Chinks and Ah nehs want to live in harmony with other races.

Singapore used to be part of m&d territory until 1819. One of the useless sultan's sons signed away Singapore so that the British would support his claim to the throne. And with that, the johor sultanate lost its claim over Singapore. There was also a change in the actual dynasty behind the Johor Sultante. The current sultan and his family tree is different from the sultan who signed away Singapore in 1819.

The territories claimed by a single m&d family doesn't mean the entire m&d race has a claim on the land. That's how monarchies and feudalism worked.
