Spot on analysis. GKS was one of the assholes. winsemuis told him the greatest impediment to progress was the trade unions and labour unrest. that is why he whacked and subjugated them into the submission

You don't have to be a fan of Goh Meng Seng, or even like him, to see the kernels of truth in his statement.
I would modify it and say that the PAP Old Guard e.g. Goh Keng Swee kept LKY's megalomaniacal tendencies in check. Even LKY feared his contemporary adversaries e.g. David Marshall and JBJ, or at least gave them a bit of grudging respect.
Once they started dying off or getting moved out of the main picture, LKY began to 'chut pattern': employing his Familee members in high positions, getting discounts for Nassim Jade condos, setting up Yong Pung How (a banker) as the Chief Justice, and last but not least, setting up his Ah Loong son as the de facto Crown Prince.
For the economic accomplishments, give credit to Albert Winsemius.
But don't expect history textbooks, the presstitutes of SPH and Mediacorp to tell you the truth. Especially not in a year of SG50 revisionist hysteria and self-aggrandizement antics. Incidentally, a LKY movie and a couple of LKY musicals are currently in production. You think that's coincidence?
