Karachi: A man visiting an office in search of a job Wednesday died after he panicked and jumped from the eighth floor of a building after a fire broke out.
The 15-storey building of State Life Insurance in Saddar, a busy business centre of the city, caught fire before noon due to an electric short circuit.
The victim, Owais Baig, who came to the office seeking a job, broke out of a window and hung outside. The television footage showed the panic-struck Baig could not hold on and he slipped off the window edge and fell.
The injured young man was rushed to a hospital with severe broken bones. Doctors said some of his bones pierced into his internal organs causing death.
The fire was put out by the fire brigade and many people working inside were rescued.
Chief fire fighter Ehtesham Uddin said the young Baig might have been overwhelmed with fear in the backdrop of recent fires the city had witnessed resulting in him jumping.
“The fire was not that huge and it seems that the ill-fated youth acted fearfully,” Uddin said.
