FOLLOWING the resignation of Mr Michael Palmer as Speaker of Parliament, there have been reports of some possible candidates who could be considered for the post ("Several names suggested for Speaker role"; last Friday).
Among them are former Cabinet ministers Wong Kan Seng and Mah Bow Tan. I fully support appointing one of them as the next Speaker.
As the saying goes: "Old is gold." Mr Wong and Mr Mah have contributed immensely to politics and Parliament.
:*:
They have both been the Leader of the House in the previous Parliaments, and are well attuned to the standing orders and procedures of Parliament. They are the most qualified candidates for the post.
In fact, instead of taking a risk and appointing a young Speaker, as was the case after the 2011 General Election, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong should seriously consider either Mr Wong or Mr Mah for the post.
I hope Mr Lee will continue to tap the capabilities and talents of his former ministers.
