U guys grow up with a silver spoon meh? Most likely u guys grew up dirt poor, and then work your way up to be able to afford car/condo etc and eat good food. Never forget the food that raised u and kept u alive, most likely was cheap.
 
It’s nothing new previously was going for about 1-2 bucks. Note this you have to prepare it yourself like shelling and cleaning it before cooking. The cooking process takes quite awhile. You’re better off buying the canned version which aren’t expensive nowadays

This is actually a type of sea snail that looks like abalone. Not a true abalone. This is chilean abalone otherwise known as Concholepas concholepas.
