George Yeo meets Pope


During the meeting, Mr Yeo conveyed the good
wishes of President S R Nathan, Prime Minister
Lee Hsien Loong and the people of Singapore.

FOREIGN Minister George Yeo had a brief call
on Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday during
an official visit to the Holy See on Tuesday and Wednesday.
During the meeting, Mr Yeo conveyed the good
wishes of President S R Nathan,
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and the people
of Singapore. He also handed the Pope a
letter from President Nathan inviting him to
visit Singapore next year in conjunction with
the establishment of 30 years of diplomatic ties.
The Pope thanked President Nathan for the
invitation and gave his blessings to the
people and government of Singapore.
While in the Vatican, Mr Yeo discussed ways
to enhance bilateral cooperation, especially
in inter-faith dialogue, with several leaders
of the Catholic Church. They include the
President of the Pontifical Commission and
Governorate of Vatican City State
Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo, Secretary for
Relations with States Archbishop Dominique
Mamberti, and Secretary of the Pontifical
Council for Justice and Peace Mario Toso.
Mr Yeo also called on Archbishop Emeritus
of Boston Cardinal Bernard Francis Law and
Prelate of Opus Dei Monsignor Javier Echevarria.

Myanmar’s generals depend on Singapore — for banking, trading, even Armani clothes. Singapore’s government has taken the first step by condemning the dictatorship. Now if we’re serious, we need to put action on the table.
Let’s send Foreign Minister George Yeo our urgent messages of support and encouragement – let’s do all we can for unconditional dialogue in Myanmar, and tell the generals that otherwise they’re not welcome here.
