Apple's iPhone X Facing Major Battery Problems

Ewan Spence ,

CONTRIBUTOR

Does the iPhone X have a problem with wireless charging? Reports are coming in of iPhone X owners discovering that the use of the induction charging system that was introduced to the iPhone family in September has been burning through a significant number of battery cycles. Given Apple suggests that after 500 cycles an iPhone battery will offer around 80% of its original capacity, that could result in a non-optimal battery in under than two years.

ZDnet’s Adrian Kingsley-Hughes has been using wireless charging on his iPhone X, and in less than six months he has reached 135 cycles.

So my battery is on track to hit 500 recharge cycles in 20 months, and that's not allowing for any battery wear, a rogue app sucking the battery dry, or an iOS update deciding to drain the battery quicker than usual. Realistically I'm expecting to hit the 500 mark in less than 18 months if I don't change my habits.

Previously I would have expected an iPhone to make it closer to the 36-month/three-year mark before hitting the 500 recharge cycle (working out as a full recharge every couple of days or so).

The long-term effects of Qi charging on batteries are well understood. As a member of the Wireless Power Consortium, Apple will have access to the latest research and implementation standards and I would think that it is unlikely to have made any significant error in the That said, Apple is already facing issues with the longevity of its batteries and the requirement to throttle back the processor in some cases after less than a year of use.

Meanwhile Samsung, which has been using wireless charing in the Galaxy S handsets for a number of years, has a battery guarantee of 95% capacity after two years of use. While that offer was made in part to bolster a weakened reputation after the Note 7 battery fires, it is still highly visible and builds up user confidence.

What does Apple have on show? A significant volume of reports of weak batteries, throttled iPhones, and a reluctance to discuss what is going on in a timely manner. It does offer a discount on a replacement battery for some handsets, which suggests that Apple believes the correct solution is to replace the battery rather than address the potential issues causing the high degradation in the first place. Now take that perception of Apple and add in this new issue of wireless charging ‘burning through’ the lifespan of the iPhone X battery.

The company that prides itself on a public image of accessible technology that just works is about to take another hit.

With everyone convinced that the answer is to replace their battery for $29 after a year or two, the chances are that the typical upgrade cycle of two years between new handset purchases will be extended because “I’ve just put a new battery in my smartphone” will reduce the turnover of iPhone upgrades and depress Apple’s falling year-on-year sales even more.

What impact will an increase in battery replacements have on iPhone sales? CEO Tim Cook doesn’t know, as he explained on Apple’s recent quarterly earnings call:

“We did not consider in any way, shape, or form, what it would do to upgrade rates,” Cook explained. “We did it because we thought it was the right thing to do for our customers. And sitting here today, I don’t know what effect it will have.”

If Apple’s response to this battery issue is as fast and comprehensive as that of 2017 then millions of iPhone X owners are in for a bumpy and unpredictable ride.

Now read more about Tim Cook failure of leadership around the original iPhone battery response…

It is much more GENERAL & WIDESPREAD than Note 7 because for 25 million Note 7 made and sold, only 2 or 3 dozens got batteries fire. This Gay Phone X batteries life issue is 99.99% or 100% and EVERY SET can expect to be bad.

just use normal charging via the lightning port with a cable. avoid induction charging as the tech is still relatively new to smartphones with built in batteries. although new data on degradation to battery life is already available from widespread use at starfucks stores which provide induction charging 6.9 years ago.
