Minimum wage gets maximum attention

MPs spend five hours discussing how to help low-income workers

THE recent public debate over whether or not Singapore should implement a minimum wage made its way into Parliament yesterday, as close to 20 MPs from both sides of the House grappled with its merits in addressing the plight of low-wage workers.

The marathon five-hour session was sparked off by a motion moved by labour MPs Josephine Teo and Mr Zainudin Nordin, both of Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, urging the Government to do more for low-wage workers.

None of the MPs who spoke advocated that Singapore should implement a minimum wage now.

Almost all who spoke on the topic argued that it would do more harm than good; by diminishing the economy's competitiveness, they said, the measure would lead to unemployment for the very workers it intended to help.

Instead, suggestions piled up on how to improve the Workfare Income Supplement (WIS) scheme, a regular payout given to encourage low-wage workers to stay employed.

As Mrs Teo declared: 'I think it's fair to say that most members agree that Workfare is a better alternative.'

Why Workfare is better, Singapore

NO CALL FOR MINIMUM WAGE

'What is infinitely clear is that no one has argued definitively for a minimum wage. No one is prepared to make an outright call to the Government to implement a minimum wage, because no one is 100 per cent confident, in fact not even 50 per cent confident perhaps, that it is better than what we have today.'

MP Josephine Teo

But an across-the-board minimum wage would be difficult to recommend, given the diversity of companies in each sector, said labour MP Halimah Yacob (Jurong GRC).
She is NTUC one right? Shouldn't she be arguing for the workers?

MP Heng Chee How (Jalan Besar GRC) cautioned, “But when you set it too quickly and too high, companies cannot catch up. Workers become unemployed as companies close down.”

Ya, but is he saying that our "best in the world" civil service don't know where to set it so it is not "too high"? KNN is this guy insulting our local talents trained overseas?

“It is very dangerous just to try to meet a number that applies across the board,” he added, noting that history shows overly high wage increases preceded the 1985 recession.

And overly low wages? Why be concerned with overly high, when real wage has been declining for 4 years? The problem is LOW wages, not high wages!

Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong mounted a robust defence of the government’s decision against a minimum wage, reported ST.

He said, other Asian countries with a minimum wage are “not at all happy”. For instance, an observer in Hong Kong forecast that 100,000 low-wage jobs could be lost as employers are unable to pay their workers and they close down or move elsewhere.
Wa I thought PM always say to give value added jobs, move up the skills etc? How come this ministar is trying to defend LOW WAGE JOBS? What is his objective? He got correct policy brief or not?

And those countries which are not happy, is because the minimum wage too LOW or too high? Can exprain?

Minimum wage also remains a thorn in relations between unions, employers and the government in Taiwan, he said.
Tolong ministar... wage is always a thorn in any Union to Gahmen to Employer relations. Employer always want LOWER wages to cut costs, workers always want HIGHER wages for their time and Gahmen is always their stuck in between!

Mr Gan said, “A guaranteed level of income may remove the incentive for training for less productive workers.” Workfare, in contrast, does not risk displacing low-skilled workers because the government bears the cost, he noted.
HUH?! What this ministar talking? If your guaranteed income is LOW you will still go for higher skill training what! Ministar is thinking of a high income benchmark for all of us? So there was a recommendation for all of us to be paid USD1million a year is it?

I really expect better reasons from these highly paid people!

What Does the Black Rose Mean?

Black is the color which has always been associated with death and the dark side of human nature. Conventionally, it is the mysterious color, which could also represent elegance and sophistication. Naturally, a black rose is also associated with death and mourning. However, black rose does not exist in nature, though they commonly feature in fictions. Generally, roses with deep red or maroon colors are referred to as black roses. Sometimes, florists can also produce black roses, by simply dyeing the roses in black color.

The conventional black rose meaning is death and mourning, and this is the reason why it is included in funeral procession to connote the loss of a loved one or friend. In this case, a black rose is the symbol of sadness and farewell. However, this is not the only meaning attached to this unique flower. Black roses can be used to mean several different things, and many emphasize that, black rose could also mean a new beginning and rebirth. To be more specific, black roses mean death, and death can be followed by rebirth, and that is why, black roses inspire many to start afresh.

However, black roses are rarely given as a gift to a loved one, as they stand for tragic love. Black roses are known to mean the end of something, which could be a relationship, an idea or a career. So, when sent to a lover, a single black rose could symbolize the death of the relationship. But, black roses like the color black, can mean both the positive and the negative, and on the positive side, it could stand for deep devotion. When gifted to a loved one, black roses can mean a devotion that is so deep and rare, just like the flower itself.

Sometimes, a single black rose can be sent by a person leaving for a war, or before undertaking a perilous journey, from which he does not expect to return safely. Apart from these, protestation or resistance, as well as courage and strength are some other common black rose meanings. But, when sent to an enemy, black rose can represent the feeling of hatred and vengeance. In modern fictions, black rose and the color black is used to connote the evil, the erotic and the darker and shadowy side of human nature.
