Ex-fugitive lawyer's jail term extended from 9 to 12 years

By tham yuen-c

The jail term of former lawyer Tan Cheng Yew, who was on the run for six years after he misappropriated a client's funds, was increased from nine years to 12 years on Friday.
Tan's sentence for criminal breach of trust and cheating had been raised by Justice Lee Seiu Kin, who agreed with the prosecution that nine years had been "manifestly inadequate".
Meanwhile, Tan's appeal on points of law, regarding his extradition, was dismissed.
He was convicted of misappropriating funds to the tune of $4.8 million. The money was entrusted to him by a Tan family, not related to him.

Sad story. Talented man who went astray. His batch got a lot of problems.

Tan had been on the run for six years from 2003 to 2009, before he was arrested in Germany and extradited back to Singapore.

The one-time star debater at the National University of Singapore law faculty comes from a family of lawyers. His brother, Professor Tan Cheng Han, was the dean of the law faculty at NUS and a Senior Counsel, while is father, Mr Tan Hock Kim, is a retired lawyer.

He brought disgrace to his august family. When his brother and father are out and about people will point to them and laugh behind their backs.

Remember one Chortle Sing & his famous spouse, son case of "snorting" the___!!

It is not what they have done wrong..it is the SHAME!...

but what shame? shame because they are the same blood? then they should get some balls
and get respect from their own NON shame

I remember a multiple share application incident in the 1990s. This involved people putting in more than 1 application to apply for hot new IPO share offerings. (Back then applications were made through cashier's order and not via the ATM.) Making multiple applications is an offence. Two high flying establishment figures were caught. The level of disgrace was such that the father of one of them suffered a heart attack and died.

I love this thread already.

It is not the "balls", they may get 'elongated" & hang or they might "shrink"...but if one is of a certain reputation & built up a name within a certain industry & connections need it be social, business. You need STRONG BALLS to hold one head high & not hang in shame. But Asian people, the loss of face is much stronger for it is shameful, BALLS has nothing to do with it.

$4.8mil in exchange for 9 years is really not worth let alone 12 years. Sad case. Now say he go to jail still must pay the $4.8mil or not?

Paying back is called restitution. I doubt much, if any, of the money was ever recovered. (It was gambled away at the casino tables.) Thus, the length of the jail term.

a top lawyer of excellent quality sadly destroywd by gambling...
He would hve greatly contributedbto the Bar or even the Bench had he not get suckered in gambling.

Lets just say if he misappropriated $4.8 mil and he went on the run for 6 years. When he kenna caught he could return all back 100% and more because he made good investment etc. What you think will be the jail term?
