Ex-fugitive lawyer's jail term extended from 9 to 12 years
By tham yuen-c
The jail term of former lawyer Tan Cheng Yew, who was on the run for six years after he misappropriated a client's funds, was increased from nine years to 12 years on Friday.
Tan's sentence for criminal breach of trust and cheating had been raised by Justice Lee Seiu Kin, who agreed with the prosecution that nine years had been "manifestly inadequate".
Meanwhile, Tan's appeal on points of law, regarding his extradition, was dismissed.
He was convicted of misappropriating funds to the tune of $4.8 million. The money was entrusted to him by a Tan family, not related to him.
