Former Chief Justice to be SMU Chancellor

Former Chief Justice of Singapore Mr Yong Pung How has been appointed Chancellor of the Singapore Management University (SMU).

His appointment, for a term of five years, takes effect Wednesday.

Mr Yong takes over from Dr Richard Hu, former Minister for Finance who has served as Chancellor of SMU since July 2002.

Currently the Pro-Chancellor of SMU, Mr Yong Pung How is also Chairman of the Advisory Board and Distinguished Fellow of the School of Law at SMU.

Professor Howard Hunter, President of SMU said: "SMU enjoys a special relationship with Mr Yong, who has been a close friend of the university, and is very proud to have him as our new Chancellor.

"We also want to register our gratitude to Dr Hu for his eight years of service as Chancellor during which he has given us his encouragement and confidence".

What else is new?

All these elites will claim they want to "step down and retire" but they end up in some government-linked posts.

Part of his job entails having breakfast every morning in the office?

same old ting.
always create new position/body to pay hefty sum of salary to these puppies.

end of day, who pay their salary? we again.

:oIo:

Wahlan eh! I thought he should by now be bed-ridden and of very frail health. He is even older than his good buddy! Apparently reports about his poor health is misleading! As Chancellor, he has more good years!:D

He'll be kicking the bucket in no time! BTW, his only daughter, Yong Ying I, is still single and available. Perhaps u might want to consider wooing her. If u succeed in becoming Pung Sai's son-in-law, u won't have to work for the rest of your life! :D

Er... she looks like him. Granted she's not in the same league as the other unmarried one, but still....

If I am so siao as to woo her (assuming I pass her very high expectations and that of her old man) then I'll also be telling the whole world what a classical beauty our dear Ho Jinx is! Both are comparable in the looks department.

YPH is LKY's crony, bosom-pal, and was his best man.

SMU dons have been too rebellious lately, coming out with contradictory messages to the public that LKY does not like.

So he's been sent in there to control.

Well, when he was the Chief Injustice, he said that the accused(in some other countries they are called the defendants which is more appropriate) will have to hope that he had a good breakfast so that his sentence would be less harsh.

His daughter Yong Ying I boasted that she's an expert in I Ching, the Chinese art of predicting the future. True or not, we don't know.

He also once told an appellant's lawyer that compassion has gone out of the window a long time ago, when the latter asked the court to exercise compassion on his client. Lawyers used to joke that one has to be careful when walking along the High Court building cos one may never know when compassion will fly out from the window and land on one's head!
