This year, our top O-level scorer hails from Malaysia -- and nearly half of the 40 students who bagged nine or more A1s are also foreigners. This is a wake up call for us, say STOMPers.
On Jan 10, 2011, at 2pm, the GCE O-level examination results were released islandwide. Some shed tears of joy, others, tears of disappointment.
For the third year running, CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' has produced Singapore's top O-level student. This year, Chia Pei Yun, who hails from Selangor, Malaysia, bagged the top spot with 11 A1s. The two before her also hail from Malaysia.
China-born students from Crescent Girls' School have also topped their cohort with their stellar showing of 9 A1s. With just a year to power their English grades from an F9 to an A1, they showed that with sheer grit and determination, it was possible.
In fact, this trend of foreign students coming neck-to-neck with and even outscoring local students has been going on for a few years. In 2007, half of the 25 O-level top scorers were from China, Malaysia and Korea.
STOMPer O-dear feels S'pore students should really buck up lest we even fail to secure a place in the list of top scorers.
Said the STOMPer:
"Wake up, wake up! We must do our country proud!
"Not to say we didn't do well, but surely, with the number of local students currently outnumbering foreign students, we could produce more top scorers right?
"Have we grown too complacent with our results that we fail to achieve -- right in our own country?
"Look at that Xavier Ong fellow -- he's so proud of his O-level 'score', which consists of straight-Ts, as his results were terminated due to his misconduct during the exam.
"Those taking their O-levels this year, it's only January, so work hard and do us proud next year!"
STOMPer rachel also hopes locals will pull up their socks:
"This report in the papers today reminded me of what PM Lee mentioned recently, 'So it's not just that the Chinese are low-paid and cheap (workers), but they are very skillful and capable and they are going to make a lot of progress'.
"He said Singapore has to continue to improve its education system to make further progress.
"While the education system here improves, I also hope the locals will be motivated to do better. If not, they will really be lagging behind."
