3 Colombians jailed for housebreaking

SINGAPORE: Three Colombians, who admitted to one of the largest housebreaking cases in recent years, were sentenced to between two-and-a-half and five years' jail on Monday.

Thirty-three-year-old Fernandez Zamora Edwin, 42-year-old Hernandez Beltran Edwin Neil and 43-year-old Luis Carlos Carrillo Ramirez admitted to stealing some S$300,000 worth of cash, jewellery and gold bars from a semi-detached home along Upper Serangoon Road on June 13 at about 8.30pm.

The trio had climbed over the low wall surrounding the house.

They then broke the kitchen window to gain entry.

For facing only this charge, Ramirez was jailed two-and-a-half years.

The three were in cahoots with 34-year-old Sarmiento Cardona Alvaro, who was also arrested.

Edwin and Neil also admitted to colluding with Alvaro to break into a property at Countryside Road.

The three men broke into the house on June 9 at about 7.30pm and made away with jewellery, collector stamps and cash amounting to some S$40,000.

For the two break-ins, and two other charges that were taken into consideration, Edwin and Neil were sentenced to five years' jail each.

The four men had come to Singapore in early June on social visit passes.

The female server, 22, was so concerned about the customer’s safety, she decided to keep her company outside. Then the server felt someone grab her right buttock. She turned around and saw a man pulling his hand back. This incident landed Francis Lawrence Del Rosario, 30, in court yesterday. He pleaded guilty to outraging the modesty of the server and her colleague, and for voluntarily causing hurt to the server at about 2am on March 30. The court was told that the server confronted Rosario after he grabbed her and asked: “Who are you to grab my *** and touch me?” He pointed at her and replied sarcastically: “Do you think you are pretty?” He then pushed her and said loudly: “You are ****ing ugly.” When the man continued pushing her, she grabbed his shirt and told him to stop touching her. But he pulled her hair and punched her. A bouncer from the restaurant-bar and another customer saw Rosario punching the server. Two bouncers then restrained him and the police were called. Just before Rosario assaulted the server, he had done the same thing to her colleague, a 28-year-old guest relations officer. The guest relations officer was standing at the bar waiting for drinks to be prepared so she could serve them to customers when she felt someone touch her buttock. She turned around and saw Rosario walking away quickly. She didn’t go after him but told the bartender about it before carrying on with her work. Caught on CCTV Rosario’s indecent act was caught on CCTV. The tennis player, who holds Canadian and Australian passports, was in Singapore to play in a tournament and also work as a coach. An online search showed that he played in the qualifiers of the Singapore ATP Challenge on Feb 27. He is also listed as a tennis coach for a company in Canada. In mitigation, Rosario’s lawyer, Ms Gloria James, said: “This has been a painful and traumatic experience for Francis. Because of his actions, he has caused himself grave financial setbacks.” She added that Rosario had to remain in Singapore after his arrest and on top of using up all his savings, this has also cost him his job contracts in Canada. Said Ms James: “When two bouncers came to restrain Francis, he was punched by them and lost consciousness.” Rosario had blood stains on his nose and face as a result, she told the court. He is expected to be sentenced on Aug 7. For outraging the modesty of a woman, he can be jailed up to two years for each charge. He can also be fined or caned. Man jailed for molesting 3 women

SINGAPORE: A Canadian national who also holds an Australian citizenship was on Tuesday sentenced to two weeks' jail for molesting three women and punching one of them.

Francis Lawrence Del Rosario, aged 30, was with a friend at a club in Clarke Quay on March 30 this year, at about midnight, when he committed the offences.

Within a span of about two hours, the professional tennis player cum coach grabbed the buttocks of three women, aged 20 to 28.

Rosario faced a fourth charge of punching the 28-year-old woman after she confronted him about outraging her modesty.

He got riled up when she told him off and he pushed against her chest.

The woman grabbed Rosario's shirt and warned him not to touch her, but he pulled her hair and punched her in the face in response.

In mitigation, the defence said Rosario is a first-time offender and the incidents occurred after he had one too many drinks.

The defence also said Rosario is remorseful, has apologised to the women and made total compensation of more than S$1,100 to two victims.

Prosecution proceeded on three of the four charges.

The court ordered two of the sentences to run consecutively, making the total punishment a two-week jail term.

Motorist charged with causing death by dangerous driving

A motorist was charged in a district court on Tuesday with causing the deaths of a motorcyclist and a pedestrian by dangerous driving.

Ma Jun Jie, 24, allegedly beat the red light while driving across the signalised junction of Clementi Road and Bukit Timah Road and hit rider Daim Arsad, 63, before knocking into Madam Teo So New, 72, standing at a traffic light island.

This happened around 10.55am on March 28, 2012.

If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to five years.

3 ex-maids fined for "moonlighting"

SINGAPORE: Three Filipino former foreign domestic workers (FDWs) have been fined between S$3,000 and S$5,500 for "moonlighting" by working in other households.

They were charged on Tuesday by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

MOM said on Wednesday the three held work permits as FDWs. However, instead of working only for their official employers, they performed household chores for other employers.

All three pleaded guilty.

Celestina Samam Castro, 55, was fined S$5,500.

She had a permit to work for Tan Tok Jin at Cambridge Road. But she also worked illegally for Husainee s/o Saifuddin between December 2009 and 30 November 2011.

She performed chores such as ironing and cleaning every Wednesday from 8am to 12pm and was paid S$10 per hour.

Ester Grospe Mathilde, 50, was fined S$5,500 for committing the offences between July 2007 and December 2011.

She was issued a work permit to work for Ho Soo Ghim Grace in Hougang. But she also worked for Daniel Foord Thompson and at the residence of someone named Daniel, for four to five hours every Friday. She was paid S$10 per hour and another S$10 for transport.

Mary Grace Sobrejuanite Daclangin, 38, was fined S$3,000 for the offences committed between November 2009 and April 2012.

She worked part-time for Zhang Liuhang. She was given a day off every Sunday by her official employer, Linda Cheng Mei Lin. But she cleaned the flat of Zhang on Sundays for three hours at S$10 per hour.

Celestina and Ester were also charged with failing to stay in the residential addresses of their employers.

MOM also added a fifth charge to Celestina for conspiring with Ester to work as an illegal part-time domestic worker.

The ministry said from 2009 to 2011 eight FDWs have been convicted. Seven of them were fined between S$2,000 and S$13,000, while one was jailed for two months.

In the first half of 2012, three FDWs were convicted and fined between $1,000 and $5,000.

MOM has investigated both the official and "illegal" employers and will take action against them.

The ministry has reminded all FDWs that they should only work for the employers specified in their work permits. They should not be self-employed or be "moonlighting".

MOM has also warned the public not to engage the services of FDWs who are "moonlighting".

Woman gets jail & fine for stealing Ferragamo wallet

SINGAPORE - An Australian woman was sentenced to one day's jail and fined S$1,200 for stealing a branded wallet.

56-year-old Alexander Bratislava was convicted on Wednesday.

She stole the wallet from a Duty Free Shop at the departure hall of Changi Airport Terminal 3 at about 3pm on 17 June.

She swiped the S$690 Ferragamo wallet and held it under her armpit.

Bratilava could have been jailed up to seven years and fined.

38 foreign women arrested for unlawful employment and immigration offences

Police have arrested 38 female foreigners for unlawful employment and immigration offences in an operation against errant entertainment outlets.

The six-hour operation started at about 10pm on August 17 and involved 70 officers from the Central Police Division and the National Environment Agency.

Entertainment outlets located at Jalan Sultan, Havelock Road, South Bridge Road, Little India and the Esplanade area were checked.

The 38 women who were arrested were from China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Investigations are on-going.

French woman charged with stealing S$32,800 handbag

SINGAPORE: A French woman was charged on Wednesday with stealing a Ralph Lauren bag worth S$32,800.

42-year-old Olivia Lemercier Maurice will be pleading guilty to one count of theft in a week's time.

Her police bail of S$10,000 has been extended till then.

Her passport has been surrendered.

The blonde petite woman allegedly stole a Ralph Lauren "Ricky Alligator 33" Honey Brown-coloured handbag from a Ralph Lauren shop at Marina Bay Sands on July 30 at 8pm.

Lemercier, who is married with children, has been remanded in Changi Prison since her arrest.

Her husband also turned up in court on Wednesday.

MediaCorp understands the couple were tourists here during the alleged incident.

Maurice will be back in court on August 29.

If convicted, she could be jailed up to three years and fined.

Foreigner bribes policemen over littering summon

SINGAPORE - A foreigner who tried to offer two police officers a $20 bribe on Wednesday has been arrested.

At 2.30am on August 22, Staff Sergeant Yeo Mingshu Yves and Corporal Fatin Hazirah conducted checks on a woman who was smoking outside Orchard Towers.

She had discarded her cigarette butt on the floor despite prior warnings, and was told that she would issued a summon for littering.

As the officers were in the process of taking down her particulars, the woman decided to offer them a bribe of $20.

The officers did not accept it, instead they placed her under arrest for the offence of bribery and referred her to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB).

Both officers were commended for upholding integrity.

"Integrity and professionalism are core values of every SPF officer," said Commander of Tanglin Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commisioner of Police Lu Yeow Lim in a statement to the media.

Jail term tripled for man who molested girl

SINGAPORE: A man who was due to be released from prison next week had his jail term tripled to five months after a successful appeal by the Public Prosecutor on Thursday.

Indian national Vashist Davender Kumar had been convicted of molesting a 15-year-old Australian girl and was sentenced to six weeks' jail last month.

The victim was in Singapore to participate in a sports competition, while 42-year-old Vashist, an engineer, was here to attend a design conference. Both were guests at the Parkroyal Hotel on Kitchener Road.

At the hotel's swimming pool on July 18, Vashist had approached the victim, who was clad in a bikini, and asked if she wanted to accompany him into the male changing room. When she refused, Vashist moved forward and squeezed her breast. He then asked her again to follow him into the male changing room.

The victim retreated to the female changing room and later reported the incident to her teacher, who notified the authorities.

On Thursday, Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Sanjna Rai argued that the six-week jail term was too lenient. The District Judge had also not given "sufficient regard" to aggravating factors, such as Vashist's intrusion of the victim's private parts, added the DPP.

In response, Mr Peter Fernando, Vashist's lawyer, said his client was "very contrite, remorseful, embarrassed and ashamed". But Ms Sanjna Rai said Vashist had exhibited ill-intent towards the victim from the outset and had persisted in his advances, showing a clear lack of remorse. - TODAY

Briton acquited of molest but fined for swearing at police officer

SINGAPORE: A Briton who molested a woman in Clarke Quay, was acquitted of the charge after he apologised to her in open court and was ordered by the court to pay her S$5,000 in compensation.

39-year-old Patrick Cormak Cusack, an engineer with a multinational corporation, apologised to the 29-year-old woman for causing her hurt or distress for the incident on May 1. Cusack, who is married with four children, added that it was "completely out of character" for him.

However, Cusack was still slapped with a S$2,000 fine for a second charge of hurling obscenities at a police officer who tried to arrest him for the offence. Cusack swore at Staff Sergeant Nazri Ahmad when he was being questioned.

The court heard that Cusack, who is here for training, had consumed some alcohol during the time of the offence. Cusack's lawyer added that his client had since apologised to the officer and had "learnt a difficult lesson."

Australian charged with molest on SIA flight

SINGAPORE: An Australian citizen was charged on Monday with using criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty.

30-year-old Rajput Sandeep Singh allegedly molested the woman onboard a Singapore Airlines flight on August 25.

He allegedly touched her groin and thighs at about 5.30am during the Delhi-Singapore flight.

If convicted, he could be jailed up to two years, fined or caned, or any combination of the punishments.

M'sian jailed 4 months for sex with underage Vietnamese girls

SINGAPORE - A Malaysian man was sentenced to four months in jail on Tuesday for having sex with underage Vietnamese girls, The Straits Times reported.

Chan See Sean, 41, who worked in a piling and construction company, is the sixth man sentenced for obtaining sexual services of three Vietnamese girls aged below 18 in July 2011.

Chan was accused of engaging the services of two underage prostitutes on separate occasions last July.

He met the first girl, a 16-year-old, through an unnamed Vietnamese female at a pub in July last year. He then proceeded to drive her to a hotel where they had sex. He paid her $100 for her services.

In the second case, Chan met a 17-year-old girl at the same pub where she was a female companion of his friend. His friend told her that Chan liked her, and after she finished work at about 2am, she followed Chan to a hotel where they had sex. He paid her $120.

On both occasions, Chan asked the girls for their age. They told him they were 20 years old, and Chan took them at their word and did not verify their ages.

He could have been jailed for up to seven years and/or fined on each charge.

Man nabbed for theft of computer hard disks at NTU

Through the assistance of the Malaysian police, 61 hard disks were eventually recovered and seized from a second-hand goods dealer in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

SINGAPORE: Police have arrested a 21-year-old Malaysian man believed to be involved in a spate of cases involving theft of computer hard disks at the Nanyang Technological University.

In August 2012, police received two reports that a total of 83 computer hard disks worth about S$10,000 had been stolen from two of the university's computer laboratories.

Officers from the Jurong Police Division managed to establish the identity of the male suspect and subsequently arrested him.

Through the assistance of the Malaysian police, 61 hard disks were eventually recovered and seized from a second-hand goods dealer in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

The suspect will be charged in Court on Friday for theft.

If convicted, he could be jailed up to seven years and fined.

Indonesian maid jailed for false police report, theft

SINGAPORE - An Indonesian maid was jailed for five months for stealing at least $1,600 worth of items from her employer; for fraudulently having goods and money suspected of being stolen; and for giving false information to the police.

Tri Lestari, 31, had lied to police that she was assaulted by her employer Ms Roslina Ng Rosli, 37 and her husband, reported The Straits Times.

The court heard that Lestari had been referred to the maid agent after Ms Ng suspected that she was stealing from the home.

In February this year, Tri Lestari had gone to the house of the maid agent's mother-in-law and handed over a large bag of items which she claimed contained clothing, for "safekeeping".

The bag was later found to contain two watches, two pairs of shoes, a handbag and 66 pieces of assorted clothing amounting to at least $1,600, all stolen from her employer.

Other items including a gold pendant, two gold brooches and various currencies, were also found.

Lestari could not give a satisfactory response when questioned about the items.

The court heard that on Feb 29, her employer's neighbour lodged a police report after he found her crying and asking for help.

She told police Ms Ng and her husband had accused her of theft and hit her to force her to admit.

She eventually came clean on March 15.

Maid fined $100 for flicking fingers at 2-year-old

An Indonesian maid was fined $100 today for flicking her fingers at a two-year-old boy in 2011.

Her employers' son suffered a swollen lip as a result of her act.

The judge had agreed with Leni Yusanti's lawyer that the exceptional case contained "very troubling, worrying and startling facts" about the way she was treated in the home of her employers.

Defence counsel Freddie Lim told the court that the 25-year-old had to work from 6am to 1am or 2am every day.

Her meals were also few and far between, with two slices of bread at 8am; instant noodles at 5pm and dinner consisting of leftovers after midnight.

She was also made to sleep on a mat on the kitchen floor.

Leni also had trouble getting her full salary paid. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) had to step in before her employers paid her the $300 they owed.

Mr Lim argued that she had committed the offence because she was under a lot of stress.

Yusanti was caught flicking her fingers at the boy's face by a miniature video camera installed in her employers' flat.

A gag order prevents the release of any details that could identify the boy.

Mr Lim represented Yusanti pro bono on the request of Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics.

She could have faced up to two years in jail or a fine of up to $5,000, or both.

Man extradited from Germany for cheating offences in 2010

SINGAPORE - A 63-year-old French national has been arrested and extradited back to Singapore this morning for cheating offences committed at the Resorts World Sentosa casino in 2010.

Reynald Georges Victor Lasnel is accused of placing a bet after the result was known during a roulette game at the casino.

He committed the offence twice on March 26 and April 3, 2010 with the help of two accomplices.

The trio were initially arrested and charged in 2010. Their passports were impounded but they still managed to flee Singapore while out on court bail.

The subject will be present in court today to face the charges against him.

Man fined for molesting 3 stewardesses on SIA flight

SINGAPORE: A citizen of the United Arab Emirates was fined a total of S$10,000 for molesting three Singapore Airlines stewardesses.

On Thursday, Ahmad Abdulla Saleh Alyasi, 41, admitted to molesting the women on board a flight from Dubai to Singapore on August 19, between 1am and 8am.

At the time of the offences, the school teacher was travelling with his wife and five children.

He touched the buttocks of the first victim as he walked past her, carrying his child.

The victim glared at him and he apologised.

Unrepentant, Ahmad Abdulla touched the second victim's buttocks with his hand as he walked past her, while she was arranging in-flight magazines.

The second victim confronted him and he again apologised and walked off.

Ahmad Abdulla went on to touch the buttocks of the third victim and when the flight touched down in Singapore, he got arrested.

Prosecution proceeded on two of the three charges and for each charge, Ahmad Abdulla was fined S$5,000.

Frenchman gets 9 months' jail for cheating at RWS casino

SINGAPORE - A French national was sentenced to nine months' jail today for cheating at the Resorts World Sentosa casino.

Reynald Georges Victor Lasnel, 63, pleaded guilty to two charges of cheating, involving S$13,400 of winnings.

Lasnel and two accomplices came up with a plan for 'past-posting' bets, which means placing bets after the winning number is revealed.

On April 2 and 3 last year, another Frenchman Fabrice Thierry Laurent Michel allegedly placed bets with S$6,700 worth of gaming chips while Lasnel distracted the pit supervisor. After which, Spaniard Lopez Pintado Jose allegedly collected the winning payouts.

Following a tip-off from a patron, the surveillance shift manager of the casino reviewed the closed-circuit television footage and uncovered the scam.

The three were arrested and charged in court.

Despite having their passports impounded, they managed to flee Singapore while on court bail.

With help from the German authorities and INTERPOL, Lasnel was arrested at the Frankfurt airport in Germany and was extradited back to Singapore on Sept 11.

In a mitigation letter to the judge, Lasnel pleaded for leniency.

He said his two daughters, aged 16 and 19 years, are depending on him to take care of them as his wife died five years ago. He also said he is a "weak, tired and sick old man" who had undergone two operations.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ma Hanfeng however argued for a severe sentence as deterrence.

He highlighted aggravating factors, including pre-meditation and planning involved in the scam and pointed out that Lasnel had absconded while on bail.

Lasnel will start serving his sentence today. The other two alleged accomplices are still at large.
