Extraterritorial rights are necessary for First World foreigners to conduct their business in rogue states with barbaric laws. We do not question the barbaric laws these faux republics, but it is important that our citizens and representatives are not unduly inconvenienced by punitive legislation aimed at subduing silly and superstitious natives praying for no rain with chillies and onions.

All governments grudgingly abide by this convention for the simple reason that it works both ways. It protects Singapore's diplomats while they go about their jobs abroad.

Without diplomatic immunity, Singaporean diplomats in our neighboring countries could well face various forms of persecution every time Singapore has a diplomatic spat with its neighbors.

If Singapore stood out from the crowd and refused to grant diplomatic immunity, then all countries around the world would retaliate by withdrawing immunity for all Singaporean diplomatic staff.

A similar situation exists with driving licenses. Most countries honor the driving license of another country for a specific period so that their citizens can enjoy the same privilege when they travel. If one country clamps down, other countries will retaliate accordingly and the common man suffers.

No amount of immunity can protect any Ambassadors if there's any serious spat between countries. We have seen Embassy being attacked and bombed.
We should be doing what is right and not what is common or so call same privilege. What is so difficult in following the rules and regulations of those countries the Embassies are? Breaking of rules and regulations should not be a common privilege. Ambassadors represent their individual countries. I am sure these actions are against the rules in their own country too. Why should these people, be it from Sinkieland or foreign countries be granted such immunity? If a Sinkieland ambassador break the rules, have his ass kicked. Simple. Their action is a disgrace to the country they are representing. :oIo:

Once diplomatic immunity is removed, charges can easily be trumped up or evidence planted.

Diplomatic immunity removes all possibility that false charges can be laid. It's cut and dried.. you can't charge my diplomats and I can't charge yours.

However, countries are at liberty to revoke immunity if they so choose.
