I have also forgotten which year it was...knew someone too, whose relative died in the fire...it was a shock to many Singaporeans at that time..the fire! it was close to Christmas!.

Thanks Postnew for the picture of Robinson's...brings a lump in my throat for I had spent quite many shopping hours there, like I had said...mostly in the toys department.

The picture shows UOB Building the octagonal one being built...

There was this Indian man selling Big Sweep Tickets in front of Robinson's, he is now at Centre Point Orchard Rd....getting very old, now his son, now middle age man is selling Big Sweep Tickets..he was a very small boys in his shorts....then!

We have to progress...but what a price!....remember Hawaii Five O? the TV Series...they shot a scene with Jack Lord at the river side between Chartered Bank Building ( those days) & United Overseas Bank Building....

memories....:D
I think that is where they shot scenes from Saint Jack too.

Postnew its great picture of Fitzpatrick. :)

In those days traffic along Orchard Rd was 2 way.

I have no memories of what was next to Fitzpatrick, next to Bidford Rd ??. Which in future would be the location of Tivoli.

The building next to Fixpatrick's was owned by The Straits Times or Times Printers or...( not SPH, it wasn't known as that yet), it was a funny looking building & it houses a few shops, that included a coffee house, in which I frequent, and Cosdell Record shop. It had great sale once, I bought the entire LP's collection of Santana at a very cheap price...i think it was $5 each...these LP's are still around..

Tivoli...well! miss that place...& Chico & Charlie...:p

Bro! Postnew! you are the man...you must be working in the Archives...

Do you have pictures of the hawkers stall in from of Majestic Cinema & People's Park..where the huge billborad of Lam Soon Cooking Oil, Abdullah , Craven 69 & 555 cigarettes advertisement..and OVALTINE!..

Yes, that's right. Promenade (before being merged with nextdoor Paragon). Fitzpatrick made a comeback (early 80s I think), opened at the basement but eventually also wind up.

yeah , Promenade, not Tong Building :o

The Man in Spectacles standing along Hock Lam Street, looks like MBT from the days he was staying at Kim Keat Avenue..ha ha ha

Thanks for the Hock Lam Street Photos & the one of the Lime Juice Stall...15cts in those days..big money you know...kopi O cost 10c...Nescafe 25c...and not many can afford 25c...

There was a ZEE FATT tailor opposite HocK Lam Street..use to snicker at the name...and the Indian Shop that sells QUALITY LEATHER SHOES, like Swan, Salamander, Balley...

No Charles & Keth those days..and BATA SHOES not that far away from there, not to mention METRO first departmental stall at High Street.. & Chong that sells all the baking needs etc..now there are at The Adelphi...they were on the right or left hand of that picture of Hock Lam Street...

Memories..

FITZPATRICKS....yahhh!.....shop there...ZEE FAT TAILOR...ha ha ha ha postnew, thanks for the Photo....

Actually from the "online viewing only", I gather these photos may be from digitized copies of old ST papers.

Recently, it was in the news that NLB has successfully scanned & made available for online viewing ST & other SPH old newspapers from 1982 onwards (pre-1982 enabled long ago) - sort of online microfilm.

Heard can only be viewed in NLB workstations or wireless networks on their premises .... but I dunno how to use their search engine....

So, from Haiti earthquakes to Red-Shirted BKK protesters to old SIngapore photos - bro postnew is still DA MAN :D
