Food Outlets Past And Present

yup i remember this car park hawker center...my uncle used to ask me go tar pow hokkien mee or fried oyster for him ;)

after that i get to keep the change

Only tar pow ONE dish

Whenever I went there I'd get SEVERAL dishes to tau pow & pig out at home. When your young you don't care about the oily, lard laden dishes :D

Now when I think back alot of my favourites were fried.

After tore down, STB and PAP realise the whole place became too sanitised and lost its tourist charms. So, rebuild the old shophouses and simulate the old buildings. They should have just left well alone.

You have to question the PAP motives for the renovations.

In these projects I suspect the GOV't acquired the properties & relocated the people. The outcome are preserved old buildings without the people & spirit.

In many places these preserved buildings end up as PUBs, Karaoks,... These areas are usually dead at night except for customers.

Orchard Car park ( Next to Specialist Centre) Hawker Centre. Most of the stalls were good and the parking attendant was a cowboy.

some of the nights you may see some clown failed to move his car out by 6 pm so the car would get stuck there for the night, much to a chagrin of the stall owner which that car occupied the space

The Orchard Car Park glutton square is where 313@somerset is now, next to the site of the old Specialist Centre. The fame car park is opposite Centrepoint where the Koek Rd food centre was. Too many good food stalls to mention here. But speak to some of your senior uncle friends to know more.

Do note that the said car park it is NOT next to Killiney Rd. The STB appeared to have made a mistake when they touted the wrong corner as THE place.

I beg to differ, The old Orchard Car Park glutton square was on the left side of the old Specialist Centre_ pheonix hotel if you look across orchard road from the old cold storage, the right side of old Specialist Centre was a row of shophouse where 313@somerset is now

Thanks for the nice picture.

In those days, in the absence of those disgusting, ubiquitous centre road dividers / railings you get to see nowadys, people were freer to move about. And, leaders were not paid million dollars salary.

People were generally happier in those days.

Ah ... I remember my JC and then BT Campus days!

BTW, has anyone posted pics of Whitley Hawker Centre, arguably the predecessor of Farrer Park Food Centre which is now gone as well. Yes, there is a conspiracy to erase our memories and any sense of rootedness.

A big fire engulfed Robinsons (can't remember which year). 9 people died. One of them I was acquainted. She was only a young salesgirl there and she went into the elevator to get something for the customer when the power went off due to the fire.

I have also forgotten which year it was...knew someone too, whose relative died in the fire...it was a shock to many Singaporeans at that time..the fire! it was close to Christmas!.

Thanks Postnew for the picture of Robinson's...brings a lump in my throat for I had spent quite many shopping hours there, like I had said...mostly in the toys department.

The picture shows UOB Building the octagonal one being built...

There was this Indian man selling Big Sweep Tickets in front of Robinson's, he is now at Centre Point Orchard Rd....getting very old, now his son, now middle age man is selling Big Sweep Tickets..he was a very small boys in his shorts....then!

We have to progress...but what a price!....remember Hawaii Five O? the TV Series...they shot a scene with Jack Lord at the river side between Chartered Bank Building ( those days) & United Overseas Bank Building....

memories....:D

The Robinson fire was world news.

My relatives who were living in Europe read about it

Postnew its great picture of Fitzpatrick. :)

In those days traffic along Orchard Rd was 2 way.

I have no memories of what was next to Fitzpatrick, next to Bidford Rd ??. Which in future would be the location of Tivoli.

I thought Fitzpatrick was at the Paragon site next to Lucky Plaza ?
O That was later in the late 70s & 80s I suppose ....

Fitzpatrick was torn down and redeveloped to Tong Building ( Rolex showroom ) it was later pulled down and became part of Paragon extension

Am I right ?

Yes, that's right. Promenade (before being merged with nextdoor Paragon). Fitzpatrick made a comeback (early 80s I think), opened at the basement but eventually also wind up.
