This woman deserved to be sacked! You were pregnant even before you were employed!

I am writing in to seek fairness on being pregnant while being employed in my first month.

One month into my new job, I discovered that I was 5 weeks pregnant.
This was confirmed by my gynaecologiest, and I felt it was only fair that I informed my employer officially. Upon showing the certification letter issued from my gynaecologist, the company, Crystal Jade told me to pack up within 30 minutes, saying that the company do not need my services anymore.

I was appalled and disappointed at their attitude towards me.
Pregnancy shouldn't be a reason that female employees are terminated, even when they are in their probation stage. Especially so since the government is encouraging Singaporeans to be more pro active
for people like myself planning to start or have a new addition to the family.

I went through the rules under paid maternity in MCYS website. The 90 days employment service during probation do not protect the pregnant womens' welfare effectively at all. For my case, my service with the company was only a month, does it mean that the company has the rights to terminate my service under such circumstances?

Even in baby friendly country like Australia she would have been fired. There are companies here that give 6months, 9months maternity leave, even some gave 6months paternity leave as well. However, if you are not a full-time employee of at least a year, you won't get them. You are suppose to "help" the company not leach on them, not when you are pregnant. How do you expect to perform?

Are you sure? This is wrongful dismissal in Singapore, it's going to be more frowned upon in Australia.

Crystal Jade has a bad HR history. I am waiting to see what happens.

perhaps you should offer her employment, with full maternity and paternity benefits.

The company will get away in Singapore. A student shouldn't knock off what he doesn't know.

I'm a student, employ her for what? Do my homework for me?

it is illegal in HK for you to fire someone because they are pregnant.

see so developed their legal system are?

our only protects the Lee regime. so sad!!

In this case, the employer is very unfair in handling this matters.

Pregnant women in general give alot of problems..MC alot,, maternity etc ,,company operations will suffer,,that is why i dont hire women who have the intention if getting pregnant etc..affects my operations too much

Looks like the moral of the story is keep quiet about pregnancy till it becomes too obvious

To be fair to the woman; not many of them knows they are pregnant @5 weeks..
MoM will hereby allow employers to include a requirement for all female employees to declare, prior to employment, that they did not have raw sex within six months of initial employment. If the female employee is found to be pregnant after employment contract is signed, she can be terminated on the basis of false declaration.

Similarly, due to new set of paternity leave mandated by MOM, employers will also be allowed to require male new employees to declare that their wives did not have raw sex anytime within six months of initial employment contract of the male employee. If the wife gets pregnant, regardless of the identity of the biological father, the employer has the full right to terminate the employment due to false declaration.

With these manpower law amendments, singapore will remain the most employer friendly regime in the entire developed world.

Not doubting you; but did MoM specificaLLy stated 'Raw' sex ?..that sounds so grose..

Full maternity rights should be given when the person has passed the probationary period and upon confirmation of being a full-time staff. She got sacked during her probationary period and here she is, kicking a big fuss? Is this article even for real?

Good suggestion. However it needs to be fine tune a little..as unprotected sex can shoot inside or withdraw also :D

The PAPpy government is giving her $9k for giving birth ...so she can't complain.
