SINGAPORE: Three people were rescued from a flat in Hougang after a fire broke out on Tuesday morning.

A 17-year-old youth, who was rescued from the kitchen toilet, suffered from smoke inhalation and cuts to his hands.

The other two women -- one is in her 60s and the other in her 30s -- were rescued from the bedroom and suffered from smoke inhalation.

The three casualties were sent to the Singapore General Hospital.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted about the fire on the third-floor unit of Block 619, Hougang Avenue 8, at about 9.15am.

Firefighters, who encountered black smoke, used breathing equipment and forced their way into the flat.

They put out the fire in about 20 minutes.

The damage was confined to the living room of the flat.
