Fire breaks out at police HQ

PETALING JAYA: A fire broke out at the corridor of the 10th floor of Menara 2 of the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman here, which destroyed an unspecified number of unimportant documents and books.
A total of 24 firemen from three fire stations rushed to the scene after receiving a call at about 7.20pm yesterday. No one was hurt in the fire, which was put out 25 minutes later.
The 10th floor houses the Criminal Investigation Department administrative office.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the cause was being investigated.
Khalid said only documents that were of not much importance which were not used for investigations were kept at the corridor of the 10th floor, which was most affected by the blaze.
“There is no cause for alarm as only old unimportant documents were lost during the fire,” he added.
Flames and thick smoke coming out of Menara 2 of the federal police headquarters at Bukit Aman when a fire broke out on the 10th floor of the building.
He said there were personnel and officers at the building during the fire. However, no one was hurt.
He called on the people not to spread rumours, including that documents on 1MDB were burnt.
“The cause is being investigated. Stop spreading rumours,” he said.
Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Azizan Ismail said the blaze was brought under control by 7.47pm.
A total of 24 firemen in four fire engines from the Hang Tuah, Sentul and Titiwangsa fire stations were involved in the fire-fighting operations.
Menara 2 is the old tower which is the main federal police headquarters building before a new tower nearby, called Menara 1, was completed in April 2012.
The offices of the Inspector-General of Police, his deputy and the Internal Security and Public Order Department were moved to Menara 1, while the CID, management and Anti-Narcotics Depart*ment remained at Menara 2.
