The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the fire at Block 422 Tampines Street 41 at 11:45pm on Friday.

The police evacuated 80 people from the block as a precautionary measure.

Preliminary findings indicated that the fire started in a bedroom on the fourth floor and was likely electrical in origin, SCDF said.

Late night evacuation

Shin Min Daily News reported that a resident on the same level as the unit affected did not know that there was a home fire until they got a knock on the door informing them to evacuate.

Those who were evacuated reportedly could not return to their flats until 2am to 3am.

It was reported that the unit that caught fire was occupied by a couple who has five children.

The eldest child was believed to be married with a child, a toddler, who was sometimes seen in the unit.

Advisory

The SCDF advised the public not to overload electrical outlets with appliances or leave batteries and other devices charging unattended for extended periods.

Appliances should be switched off when not in use, and only appliances and electrical plugs bearing the safety mark should be used, they added.

Frayed wires or cracked cords should be replaced or repaired immediately, while wires should not be run under carpets or mats, or placed near hot surfaces, it was recommended.

Why are there so many HDB flat fires in the past decade? Sub-standard or overloaded power grid? PMDs?
